FULL TEXT BELOW:
A Granite School District police officer has been charged with aggravated assault, a second-degree felony, for shooting a man with his service pistol last October.
Officer Richard Todd Rasmussen, 44, was chasing a man suspected of driving a stolen car Oct. 20. Anthony Chavez abandoned the car he was driving, jumped a fence and ran into the backyard of a house.
Rasmussen fired a shot, striking Chavez in the left thigh.
According to the Salt Lake County district attorney's office, Rasmussen was not threatened, and did not believe that Chavez was armed. He told investigators he fired at Chavez because he feared that the suspect would take his gun. He said Chavez lunged toward him when he fired the shot. |
