The premise of this "report" is pure nonsense.

Quote "The widespread proliferation of small arms and light weapons can be curbed more effectively by reducing demand than by merely cutting off supplies, according to a new report on arms control released here."

They admit cutting off supply won't work, but they plan on reducing demand, by cutting off supply with gun free zones???

Are there really people out there stupid enough to read and believe this crap????????????

Remember this is a "United Nations" effort. United NATIONS, not united people. It's primary purpose, shielded from public view, is to enhance member NATIONS sovernity. Not to advance individual rights. They are concerned with advancing well being for those who submit to their authority...
Submit, as in "subject".

Comment by: eagpag@cox.net (1/22/2006)
In the U.S. we already have gun free zones. The United Nations should never have any effect on the laws of the United States. Our "Constitution" forbids laws being created for the United States by outside organizations or other countries.

Seems to me there was something in the past that they tried, much like this. Ah, yes, it was DRUGS! They hoped to diminish the DEMAND rather than to stop the smuggling! At last report I don't believe this worked there either.

Comment by: info@GunShowOnTheNet.com (1/22/2006)
How much are we contributing, dollar wise, to this idiocy?

Comment by: tkampert@cox.net (1/22/2006)
It's a load of crap. And, after reading the closing paragraph about the recent vote in Brazil regarding guns, it's also a bunch of Marxist, communist, crap. They don't come right out and say it, but, they are suggesting that the redistribution of wealth.(take from the rich and give to the poor...and I assume that they would mean by force if need be) is the way to prevent violence and the demand for guns. Seems to me, that such a program would do just the opposite.
Their goal is to promote socialism...actually Communism..world wide...by force, and it can't happen as long as people are armed and willing to fight.

Yes, we should have a gun-free zone; how about the UN building?

Comment by: wmmayhue7@yahoo.com (1/23/2006)
(Part 1 of 2)

The article said, in part:

“…So far, most activities at the international level have been focused on the supply side. While we need more effective supply-side controls, we also need to focus much more seriously on demand-side issues," Goldring told IPS.. …”

I just hate to point out the obvious, but the problem is not the supply source of illegal guns, it is the ever increasing criminal demand for them that drives their acquisition.

Comment by: wmmayhue7@yahoo.com (1/23/2006)
(Part 2 of 2)

And what, pray tell, causes the demand? Simple economics…the vast bulk of violent criminal activity is a direct result of the “prohibition on certain drugs” world-wide, where criminal entrepreneurs pursue the chase for huge profits from sale of the various government banned pharmaceuticals to their clientele. It is the fact that these drugs are in high demand that causes weapons to be in high demand so the criminal entrepreneurs can protect their distribution networks from infringement by rival criminals or from the forces of government who decide to leave the donut shops (or cultural equivalent) to try and curtail this activity.

Yep, prohibition sure works, be it guns or drugs...right?

If we look back to 1936-41, it was the establishment of gun-free zones that made it much easier to establish Jew-free zones, homosexual-free zones, democracy-free zones... in the name of liebensraum -- living space -- for "good Germans."
Redistribution of property, as we see today in much of Africa. The illusion of safety, as we see in the gun-grabbing cities of the world. The illusion of caring about the common people, as we have seen in any corrupt government anywhere at any time. People don't change.

Comment by: mhudson@btc-bci.com (1/23/2006)
"demand-side restraint" can be fostered through a wide range of measures, including ensuring that people are safe in their homes and that their basic needs are met, working to resolve conflicts before they become violent, and preventing easy access to weapons."
Why not just bioengineer homo-sapiens without a cerebral cortex? Or maybe just cross breed them with sheep? Or accomplish the same thing by allowing governments to develop all school education programs.

"As with drug dealers, arms dealers are often pushers, working hard to create markets for their goods..."

Codswallop! Chris Rock is correct: "People don't sell drugs; drugs sell themselves! You never see some [brotha'] on the corner sayin' 'Good Lawd, how'm I gonna get rid of all 'dis crack?' "

It's the same with guns. You could sell a whole trainload in the US, in the UK, in Australia, or even in the Solomon Islands merely by parking your train in the right neighborhood, opening up a box and announcing, "Selling!"

There will never NOT be a market for weapons. Anywhere, ever.

[“Unless the motivations and means for gun acquisition are understood, arms reduction interventions will fail.”]
Then why, exactly do unArmed people;-
Incapable of their own defense;
Incapable of defending the Rights of others; Incapable of taking Arms ‘out of the wrong hands’ themselves;
Ignorant or in abject denial of five-thousand years of documented Human History (and/or both);-
Insist on joining organizations comprised of UnArmed, Incapable, Ignorant people also in Denial of Actuality?

My understanding of supply-and-demand may be rusty, but I seem to recall that when demand is satisfied, demand dries up.

So.... make sure every person who wants a gun has one and the 'demand side' will collapse!

Comment by: saddenedcitizen@ev1.net (1/23/2006)
Great posts !
There has been a demand for 'weapons' ever since Zog The First picked up a rock and clobbered Sluggo The Simple !!!
Then Stinko The Mean said
' I gotta get me one o' them rocks so I can make others do what I want'.
The rest,as they say, is history.
The demand for weapons will NEVER be eliminated as long as there are people we must defend ourselves from or there are people who wish to rule over others.
Thinking otherwise is sheer folly !!

Along with our usual replies to this
anti-self defense rhetoric. This should also be a reminder to all of us that instead of that next
DVD or pair of jean's that we should be sending
$20 buck's to our favorite and most aggressive gun lobby.
State or national , GOA, NRA or even JPFO.
Yes their using word's but the difference is that they have televised national and international liberal media on their side.

The bitter irony here is that their comments about South Africa are total partially-digested-elephant-byproduct.

The demand for guns in SA is so high that cops are being ambushed and murdered for their sidearms and rifles. The crime rate is so astronomically high that the State has declared that publishing the numbers is now a felony. So many educated, white professionals have already fled to England, Canada, Australia, and the US to escape the the horrors of "majority" rule that the State has clamped down on exit visas and money transfers to prevent more losses.

South Africa has become Uganda, Angola, and Congo all rolled into one, and this is the gun-banner's ideal!

You know Defender, the Nazi analogy is a good one!

Saw the name in the article;...demand-side issues," GOLDRING told IPS.. …”

And the first name that popped into my mind was Goehring, as in Herman Goehring, the fat-a*s upper echelon Nazi.

To many simularities, me thinks!

Get US out of the UN - and keep UN out of the US!

Thanks, lw and info, for the update and the validation. Other people have done it, but the Nazis made it famous. We saw it coming for South Africa.
I wonder what kind of "zone" Nepal is. I see that the king has had his police arrest 300 protestors. They were protesting his new law against... protesting, for one thing. Also his dissolution of the elected government and assumption of absolute power. They were unarmed.
I know the fearsome Gurkha soldiers come from Nepal. I wonder which side they would or will take. if they have any honor, the choice is obvious.

There was of course that rather nasty incident in Rwanda back in '94. Death estimates occurring as a result of hatred between the two major factions involved range in the 800,000 or so figure.
Firearms were used but one primary implement of dismemberment and death was a farming tool;-the machete. Credit for funding afforded to the U.N. and NGO’s.
Surviving witness accounts included reports of dismembered persons pleading for someone to shoot them to end their suffering.
One action involved herding people into a church and pushing the building in on them with a bulldozer. The U.N. and Clinton did nothing to stop the carnage.
What must finally be recognized and admitted is the simple Truth that;-
VIOLENCE is a CULTURE PROBLEM.

I'm sure that the rest of you posters will agree that instead of concentrating on China, North Korea, Iran and other rogue countries from obtaining real Weapons of mass destuction, Nuclear missles, biological and chemical agents ect... these a$$holes are worried about law abiding gun owners, Is it me or is that just plain stupidity?

Comment by: mark (1/23/2006)
So "material wealth" is a causal factor in firearm violence? Somehow I don't see the nexus. The Brazilians voted "no" to have control over their destiny and safety. They, rightly so, saw no way the gov. there, aided by the abdication of the p olice to do their job, could protect them. Those fools proposing this are just socialists. They want to give all the power to the state when the state, not guns, IS responsible for the deaths of hundreds of millions. We are in a struggle between those who want to keep freedom and those who want to make us slaves. Run the Useless Nations out. They are a tyrannical organization.
