A popular NRA bumper sticker proclaims: “The Second Amendment: It’s not about Hunting.” Indeed. That leaves self-defense and rebellion. For self-defense, an AR-15 is inferior to a handgun or shotgun. For rebellion, assault weapons offer only a shortcut, bypassing initial disadvantages, to wit: Syria, where the rebels basically started with nothing and are now capturing airbases. Tea Party histrionics notwithstanding, does anyone seriously think that we resemble 1930s Germany or present-day Syria — or ever will? In effect, Wayne LaPierre says we need to tolerate dead children so Bubba can shoot cans and bottles in the woods using weaponry without any other legitimate purpose. |

The right of the people to keep and bear...arms shall not be infringed. A well regulated militia, composed of the body of the people, trained to arms, is the best and most natural defense of a free country... — James Madison, I Annals of Congress 434, June 8, 1789. |
