A late night get-to-together at a home on Sally's Branch Rd. east of London took a terrible turn in the wee hours of Thursday morning. Police say Kevin McElrath, 25, was cleaning a .45 caliber pistol when it accidently went off. "The victim thought the weapon was unloaded because he took the magazine out of the pistol and it accidently discharged," said Gilbert Acciardo, a spokesman with the Laurel County Sheriff's Office. That bullet hit McElrath in the head, killing him. But the bullet kept going…and struck 22 year old Eric Partain also in the head. He was airlifted to UK hospital in Lexington where he died Thursday afternoon according to the Lexington Herald Leader. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
Besides the advantage of being armed, which the Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation, the existence of subordinate governments, to which the people are attached, and by which the militia officers are appointed, forms a barrier against the enterprises of ambition, more insurmountable than any which a simple government of any form can admit of. Notwithstanding the military establishments in the several kingdoms of Europe, which are carried as far as the public resources will bear, the governments are afraid to trust the people with arms. — James Madison, The Federalist Papers, No. 46 |
