"Before today's presidential candidates go courting the National Rifle Association for support (witness Mitt Romney's sudden enrollment), they should be aware of the case of Jim Zumbo. One of nation's most famous and respected hunting and outdoors journalists, Zumbo was professionally assassinated by NRA hysteria for simply uttering a single and — many hunters would say — reasonable point of view."
"Returning from a weekend hunting trip in which he witnessed people using semiautomatic, military-style weapons to hunt varmints, Zumbo dashed off a column for his blog on Outdoor Life in which he played devil's advocate, suggesting these weapons are not appropriate for hunting." [link added] ... |

The AHSA leadership is a who's who of the gun grabber movement.
They are no more hunters and shooters than John Kerry was. |

| This guy is an idiot. The NRA didn't ruin this guy it was ordinary freedom loving americans that responded swiftly to his comments that killed his career ie: he opened his big mouth, thousands of angry gunowners who don't like to be labeled terrorists responded harshly, yet with every right (you know 1A) that they don't like to be discriminated against. as a result he lost his job plain and simple!!! |

Spot on, Mike.
But this part tickles me... "...can turn on a hunting legend like Zumbo ...".
Like the guy was Elmer Keith or Peter Hathaway Capstick. Zumbo had a steady paycheck from his writing career and I am sure was well read in some circles, but he was no Jack O'Connor.
That said, I aim to heap no more dishonor on Zumbo, but instead wish him well on his search to find his Second Amendment roots.
But the author of this article is way off base. |

Schoenke's looney concept of "standing up to the NRA" sounds like nothing more than a recruiting ploy for vindictive Sarah. I'm certain HIS next "devil's advocate" column will explore the likening of Jews to vermin. Do you suppose he might title it, "The Eternal Jew?"

| Ahhh..yes, now we hear from the American Hunters and Shooters Association. WOW! I'm impressed. These idiots REALLY think that we don't know who they REALLY ARE! If I were Jim Zumbo, I'd sue them for even mentioning his name in association with their organization. But, just in case there are STILL some out there who don't know....THE AMERICAN HUNTERS AND SHOOTERS ASSOCIATION IS PART OF THE BRADY CAMPAIGN. THEY HAVE FEW, IF ANY, MEMBERS, ARE FUNDED BY THE LIKES OF THE JOYCE FOUNDATION AND GEORGE SOROS. THEIR LEADERSHIP CONSISTS OF FORMER HIGH RANKING MEMBERS OF SEVERAL DEFUNCT AS WELL AS CURRENT ANTI-GUN ORGANIZATIONS. |

| If you read my posts weeks earlier regarding the "Zumbo Affair," I warned that it was an indicator that the enemy was preparing a new offensive against guns. "Shooters and Hunters" straw man "group" appears to be set up to undermine strong Second Amendment defense which is SELF-DEFENSE, not "sport." This fake group and THOSE ECHOING ITS LINE of attacking NRA, GOA, this site, etc. need to be carefully scrutinized as it is yet another attempt to DIVIDE AND CONQUER. Who is funding this group? |

I can only echo the comments of the other posters.
This fraud of a writer is trying to rev up dissention among shooters against each other. He calls the gun owners who were insulted by Zumbo as "a rabid fringe element of the hunting community". Absolute rubbush. The man is a liar and a fraud. (necessary attributes for an anti-gunner) The gun owners who were so deeply insulted by Zumbo (who as much as called them terrorists and said their guns should be banned from hunting) were HIS OWN READERS!
If this Ray SHoenke fraud had any readers outside the Brady circles, they would be equally insulted.

| It is time these idiots realized that we as citizens reject gun banners and enemies of freedom. It is not the "powerful gun lobby" or the NRA that turned over the congress in 1994. It is hight time these idiots realized that the NRA and GOA represent the citizens and not the gun lobby. |

It was cute how he tried to associate the NRA with 'a new brand of McCathyism' while we have a BRAND NEW version of McCarthyism right now known as HR1022 (Sponsored by the newest McCarthy, Carolyn McCarthy from New York) which is attempting to eliminate the Second Amendment. He is a LIAR and he knows it. |

| the zumbo debacle was the perfect media storm, having few parallels.. fascinating, amazing how many anti-2A creatures emerged from the woodwork, going international w/ the story...division/divisiveness is our worst enemy, surrounded by commies...many underestimate the importance of gun control to the Left: as usual, all about power, control and dominance--firearms are their only 'stumbling block'. |

It truly amazes me me that people will jump on the negative publicity train. In order to grab a piece of the attention. How insane does one have to be to do such a thing? This troll provides us a pretty good example, yes?
Is there ANY sanity left in America? (Other than with the obvious freedom lovers in the minority). It is as if the majority has always deemed themselves destined for enslavement or death..... |

What I think is laughable is the people still trying to claim the NRA had something to do with the Zumbo affair.
Has far as the NRA is concerned, if you want to know what a real pro-gun group is willing to do go to www.jpfo.org and down load the FREE gunsmithing book on building bolt action rifles.

Pure propaganda by a Marxist and American freedom hater. Zumbo got what he had coming. He spit in the face of every man and woman who died fighting for American by taking the oath to up hold our Constitution. Zumbo tried to play fast and lose with our God giving rights by giving aid and confort to Marxist who hate us and our rights. Thats the raw truth and bottom line about Zumbo. Zumbo is now put out to pasture and hopefully he keeps his mouth shut but to eat some of that nice green grass. If Zumbo wants to really show he's sorry then he needs to stay out to pasture. Making it clear you are with us Americans in supporting the BoR or you're not. If not then you make yourself a target for open season. This issue is black and white.

As a 20-year freedom advocate and Second Amendment purist, I had never HEARD of Zumbo until this incident. We DO need to stand up to the NRA, yes, and tell them to STOP COMPROMISING. They are the 800-pound gorilla that could disrupt the March of the Bradyites if they wanted to. They prefer to draw out the chess match when they could sweep to victory, even though the pawns taken off the board are living people obeying the rules. In this case, it's not "move one space at a time," but "obey existing gun laws and be helpless most of the time." For the good they do in defending our constitutitional rights, I thank the NRA. But if *I* had 4 million members at $35 each... we would light such a lamp of liberty as would never be put out. |

I like the last line of the article:
"Let's raise our rifles in defense of our freedoms, and speak out against any body — whether government or the NRA — that stifles honest discussion."
There is no comment allowed on this article by the Seattle Times. They publish an article calling for "honest discussion", and then don't allow any.

| Nobody stifled Zumbo, certainly not those numbnuts at the NRA. It took them more than a week to even notice the issue. What happened was a whole bunch of us peons heard about what Zumbo said, went and made sure he hadn't been misquoted, then though to ourselves, Hey, after bills and all I have this piddlin few bucks left to spend, I sure ain't gonna spend it at a business that supports this joker. Anyone who would say such garbage is not a friend to the shooting community. He's a Fudd, only caring about his own little knothole and willing to sell the rest of us out to protect it. Nobody ever said he didn't have a right to say whatever junk he wants, but he damn sure doesn't have a right to make us pay for it. |

The Second Amendment throttles government. The First Amendment throttles government.
The populace throttles idiots. And that's what happened with Zumbo. Picture the herd of sheep, armed to the hoof, turning on the wolf in the fold. That's your Aesop's Fable of Zumbo.
The government and the NRA would have preferred otherwise, for the Zumbo Incident shows the power of the individual, when aggregated as a force. This is why Imperial Japan feared America in WWII.
This is why Brady fears us today.
And this is why Zumbo is learning out, looking for a job.

| sounds like standard leftist point of view...second amendment means not only that i have freedom of speach but you have to listen me weather you want to or not (ie you cant do something like cancel a magazine subscription) and it only appies to us so lets silence the opposition (like gun rights advocates) and pretend they're the ones who are really doing exactly what we're doing in order to make them look bad...personaly i hope zumbo shouts his opinion loudly from the top of the highest mountain (first amendment needs protection too) and ill dissagree just as loudly from the top of the next mountain |

| Zumbo supposedly went to spend some time with Ted Nugent in a crash "come to Jesus" Second Amendment course. If you're watching out there, Ted, what's the report card say? There's no saint like a reformed sinner, and I would love to welcome Zumbo to the ranks of true Constitutional patriots. Don't care if you're red, white, black, pink, brown, blue, or green, if you have a PhD or can't spell, quit after 3rd grade, or have 3 teeth and 27 tatoos, if you're a patriot willing to fight for FREEDOM, I'm standing with you. |

But...I am a REAL shooter IPDA, Sporting Clays. 3-3un matches, and high power. But... I also hunt white tails, turkey, ducks, squirrel etc.
But...I was a part of the dumbo dumping
So where does that leave me? A real shooter and hunter who saw Zumbo's comment for what it was and leaned on his sponsers. I did heavily and I am PROUD OF IT!!!
I am sure I consume more ammo and gun related accourtements in a year than many "sportsman hunters" have in the entire time afield.
Guess what Zumbo's sponsers know this too. Hunting makes alot of money for the state coffers in fees. Everything else makes EVEN MORE MONEY for Zumbo's sponser companies.
Power of the hunter is past. They thankfully will no longer drive the debate. |

Jim Zumbo was a victim of his own snobbery. I personally had never heard of him before this as my interests in arms are as the founders envisioned them, for defense. In that vein, I prefer the writings of Ralph Zumbo, Jeff Cooper et al. |

Nice try Schoenke.
The problem was that Mr. Zumbo called semi-autos "terrorist weapons", implying that anyone who owns one is a terrorist.
That does not sit well with me, or anyone else who knows that the 2A is NOT NOT NOT about hunting. |

Funny thing is, what honest discussion do they want to have? I've never seen them make mention of it. Only that they want to have it. Apparently they don't know either. |
