Gun Grabber Web Watch
A Periodic Service to Help Gun Rights Activists “Watch the Enemy”

by Sean Oberle

Dec. 19-27, 2000

Author’s note: It's the holidays. The grabbers are quiet. Expect them to perk up after New Year’s.

INTERNATIONAL

** Canadian Firearm Centre issues numerous statements concerning upcoming January 1 licensing deadline, including six-month enforcement extension for people who complete their paperwork in time but do not receive their licenses due to the government being overwhelmed with applications. [Sean’s commentary: The Canadians attempt to portray being overwhelmed as “good news,” but their inability to keep up demonstrates how unworkable a U.S. licensing system would be with this nation’s tens of millions more firearms.] [KABA Note: They've now come back and offered a 6 month extension as of today, Dec 27, 2000. Considering how they've been telling us all week how many people are now complying, isn't this extension a bit odd?]

** Canadian Firearm Centre also numerous clarifications concerning media reports that “millions of airguns” must be registered because they exceed the ammo discharge limit of 500 feet per second. CFC says that for now, no registration is needed, at least until the Minister of Justice looks into the matter. [Sean’s commentary: If airguns, why not nailguns and so on.]

NATIONAL

** Million Mom March promotes safety message urging people to not shoot guns into the air to celebrate New Year’s. [Sean’s commentary: I cannot argue with this. Firing a gun into the air violates a basic rule of firearm safety: Always have a target AND know what’s behind it. If only the MMMs would limit their behavior to such PSAs.]

STATES

California Department of Justice's list of handguns legal as of January 1 for manufacture, sale, importation, lending or giving contains only 175 models. [Sean's commentary: If the grabber's drive for national firearm "product safety" is successful, folks, this is what the rest of us can expect.] [KABA Note: Bringing to mind a quote from an old friend: "And what country can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not warned from time to time that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms....The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants." ~~ Thomas Jefferson in a letter to William S. Smith in 1787. Taken from Jefferson, On Democracy p. 20, S. Padover ed., 1939]

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Congress have no power to disarm the militia. Their swords, and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birthright of an American... The unlimited power of the sword is not in the hands of either the federal or state government, but, where I trust in God it will ever remain, in the hands of the people. — Tench Coxe, Pennsylvania Gazette, Feb. 20, 1788.
