In a historic vote, the New Hampshire House of Representatives voted late
Wednesday 253-95 to impeach Chief Justice of the Supreme Court David A. Brock.
Never in the state's history has a chief justice been impeached.
In a further slap at Brock, the House turned down 231-103 a measure to give
the judge the option of retiring before the Senate trial so he could collect his
pension.
Brock, 64, has served 22 years on the court, 14 as chief justice.
Brock's legal problems revolved around the allegations that he had failed to
blow the whistle in a case involving former Justice Stephen Thayer, who
allegedly tried to influence the appointment of appeals judges to hear his own
divorce case. Brock was also alleged to have intervened in the case against a
state senator in 1987.
A New Hampshire Supreme Court justice was last impeached in 1790. That was
Judge Woodbury Langdon, who was described as "arbitrary and haughty."
He resigned rather than face a Senate trial.
