An organization calling itself "Drum Major" and yodeling about the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and Civil Rights has taken out a sizable advertisement in USA Today--a paid promotion standing in support of the $15 Million HUD gun buyback initiative called BuyBack America.  (USA Today, Tuesday, June 6, 2000)  While it does seem Drum Major's mission is one of heart-filled support for the American citizenry, equally obvious is their ignorance of: history, the racial roots of gun control, the harm their newfound bell could cause if chimed, the nature of governments committed to disarmament, the suffering that has occurred in the 20th century alone due to disarmament, and a host of other things too lengthy to mention in this brief call to action.

You can see the actual, brief advertisement from Drum Major by clicking here.  (168K for legibility, apologies to modem-dwellers, let it open in a new window and load while you finish reading the below and getting your letter ready.)  What you will see is the usual 12 Kids a day bullsnot.  Actually, they've amped it up to 13 for good measure.  You'll also see quotes aplenty from "really important people" and pictures of none other than JFK, his little brother Robert, and Mr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  We're now being told they all died because of guns, and the solution is your tax money being wasted on a federally-funded gun buyback program.

PLEASE assist in educating these people about a few things in a letter--just in case they really are this ignorant and not simply in cahoots with the tyrants.  You can use any of the following items, or any more you care to add.  I don't care about attribution on this piece, just getting REALITY into the hands of the misguided people using Martiin Luther King, Jr. and the Kennedys to lie to our citizenry and make the work of criminals easier.

• Gun buybacks generally bring junk guns or guns criminals want to dispose of.

• Why would a civil rights organization support a government in disarming its own people?

• Are you aware of the racist roots of gun control?

• 13 kids a day is a bigger lie than even Bill Clinton is willing to tell.  Even counting gang members, suicides, drug dealers, and the people shot by cops won't yield a number that high today.  Please provide the source of the false number or retract your false statement from the Americans who received this lie.

• Are you morally and emotionally prepared to deal with the fact that some of the people who bought your lie will turn in their weapon, be defenseless, and be victimized?  Or do the people you claim to serve truly matter?
