Gun Grabber Web Watch
A Periodic Service to Help Gun Rights Activists “Watch The Enemy”

by Sean Oberle (dischord)

Oct. 10 – Oct. 15, 2000

Thanks to all who emailed items and suggested sites to watch after my last Gun Grabber Web Watch. Keep ‘em coming.

** Handgun Control Inc. President Mike Barnes to speak at Seattle fund raiser Oct. 25 for Washington Ceasefire at Town Hall Seattle, 1119 8th Ave., 6pm to 8pm. Entry fees: $35, $300 for table seating. State Rep. Dow Constantine also to attend (http://www.waceasefire.org/). [Editor's Note: If you live in Seattle, get in with a Press Pass and cover the event for KeepAndBearArms.com. You can believe they won't be charging the local media to come bleat about their gun grabbing.]

** Million Mom March president Mary Leigh Blek, to speak at Nov. 4, 11am, get-out-the-vote rally at Seattle Central Community College. Seattle chapter of Million Mom March requests Oct. 12 that Commission on Presidential Debates include more questions about guns and violence in third presidential debate. (http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/001012/wa_mil_mom.html).

** Handgun Control Inc. issues statement alleging that Texas CCW system, under George W. Bush, trains and arms "convicted rapists and armed robbers." Group asserts that Bush fails to prosecute criminals who break states gun laws, comparing that to Bush's position about enforcing existing laws (http://www.handguncontrol.org/press/release.asp?Record=20).

** To draw attention to safe storage message, Common Sense About Kids and Guns distributes press release with headline stating that "Gun Accidents and Suicides Increase Among Kids." Group highlights what it calls 21% increase in two subcategories from 1997 to 1998. That percentage is possible due to small size of categories –– in one case, it is achieved with a 6 death increase, in another, a 27 death increase. Nearly all subcategories are down. Overall gunshot deaths for children and youth are down in all age groups. (http://www.kidsandguns.org/study/inthenews.asp?ID=419). See my analysis of this abused statistic by clicking here or going to http://www.keepandbeararms.com/newsarchives/XcNewsPlus.asp?cmd=view&articleid=710

** Million Mom March, in the second in a series on its founders, profiles Julie Levi, a Long Island promotional item “creator.” Crediting her with providing the 30,000 shirts sold at the May march. Group notes, “There was a saying that nothing could ruin a crooked politician's day more than a knock on the door from 60 Minutes. Now it's the moms in the tee-shirts who strike fear into their hearts. Thanks, Julie!” First profile was of Amy Putnam, who designed the group’s logo: a handgun used as a vase (http://www.millionmommarch.com/home/index.cfm?page=mom&action=mom)

** Violence Policy Center web site gets facelift. Home page relies more on text-driven format with fewer and smaller graphics (http://www.vpc.org).

** Partnership Against Gun Violence – group supporting registration of ammo – posts two patents of technology it says would help towards that goal (http://www.pagv.org/pagvpatent1.html) and (http://www.pagv.org/pagvpatent2.html).
