Gun Grabber Web Watch (Oct. 22 - 29)
A Periodic Service to Help Gun Rights Activists “Watch The Enemy”
by Sean Oberle

** HCI President Mike Barnes will be guest speaker at Nov. 16 dinner sponsored by Maine Citizens Against Handgun Violence, Marriott Hotel, South, Portland, ME. Cocktails at 6 p.m. Dinner at 7 p.m. Entry: $100. http://www.mcahv.org/dinner.htm

** Million Mom March tries to influence vote in teachers’ financial management organization, TIAA-CREF (Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association – College Retirement Equities Fund). TIAA-CREF members are voting on a proposal to forbid the fund from investing in companies “that publicly advocates firearm control or firearm prohibition legislation.” MMM is urging members to spread the word to fund members to vote against this measure. http://www.millionmommarch.com/home/index.cfm?page=article&a_id=12
Pro-RKBA members of the fund can view the proposal at http://www.tiaa-cref.org/voting/index.html. Click on "View the CREF proxy statement" and scroll down to item IV, Participant Proposals and read Proposal #1. Pro-RKBA members of TIAA-CREF can vote for the proposal by going to http://www.eproxyvote.com/tiaa-cref or by calling 1-877-779-8683.

** Disarming Violence, a multi-band punk music CD will provide funds for Pax USA, the group urging people to grill their neighbors about whether they have guns in their homes. Ad for CD urges “Help stop politicians and corporations, who are cashing in on people killing each other” and "Guns are made for one thing, and that's to kill." http://www.fastmusic.com/disarmingviolence/

** Physicians for Social Responsibility issues pocket guide, giving doctors tips on convincing patients that guns in homes cause more risk than benefit, citing such gun-controller standbys as Kellerman studies. Read the pamphlet at http://www.psr.org/pocketgun.pdf. (Read a simple and effective counter to Kellerman's preposterous "study" here: http://www.keepandbeararms.com/newsarchives/XcNewsPlus.asp?cmd=view&articleid=423.)

** Safe Colorado decries $675,000 spent in media blitz by NRA against Colorado Amendment 22 to close the "gun show loophole.” Group notes that Americans for Gun Safety President John Cowan recently said in visit to Colorado, “Frankly, it's our belief that if you can close the gun show loophole in Colorado, it will lend momentum to close the gun show loophole nationally.” http://www.safecolorado.org/start.html

** Americans for Gun Safety will spend $1.5 million in ads to urge passage of “gun show loophole” laws in Colorado and Oregon. Group statement includes opinion that these proposed laws are “considered friendly to the rights of gun owners.” Statement does not clarify whose opinion this is, nor how it it the laws are friendly. http://ww2.americansforgunsafety.com/press_oct2500.html

** Violence Policy Center re-releases annual report “When Men Murder Women” study finds that guns do not protect women because gun marketers portray unrealistic scenarios in their ads. Study does not compare gun-related crimes, injuries and deaths to self-defense uses. http://www.vpc.org/studies/dv3cont.htm. (Read a pro gun report on their "study" here: http://www.keepandbeararms.com/information/XcIBViewItem.asp?ID=1548.)

** Mothers Against Guns adds mission statement to web site, including, “We believe the minimum age for gun possession in the United States should be 21, and that all persons, including law enforcement personnel should undergo a thorough mental evaluation.” http://mothersagainstguns.org/

** Handgun Control Inc. add pop-up ad to home page http://www.handguncontrol.org, citing recent violent sounding statements
by NRA president Charlton Heston. Text reads, in part, “Do you want a man in the White House whose most ardent supporters publicly call for violence? Neither do we. Click Here To Give.” Link directs visitors to site to contribute money to HCI. Group gives no indication how it can use these funds effectively 10 days or less before election or whether these funds actually will go to election activity.

** HCI issues press release claiming GOP presidential candidate George W. Bush is hypocritical when saying he is “a uniter not a divider” because NRA President Charlton Heston, a Bush supporter, made a violent sounding statement
http://www.handguncontrol.org/press/release.asp?Record=24

** HCI adds three Colorado candidates to drop-down menu listing targeted elections. http://www.handguncontrol.org

** HCI issue press release noting that NRA gave “A” grades to presidential candidate George W Bush, Florida Senate candidate Rep. Bill McCollum, Virginia Senate candidate George Allen, Washington Sen. Slade Gorton and Missouri Sen. John Ashcroft, all Republicans.
http://www.handguncontrol.org/press/release.asp?Record=29

** Million Mom March puts graphic atop home page urging people to vote. Graphic's artwork looks like finger painting, evoking preschool and primary school children, and text reads “10 kids were killed by guns today. Vote Nov. 7.” Figure of “10 kids” is achieved by counting all children and teens, including 18- and 19-year-old adults who are violent gang members. http://www.millionmommarch.com

** CeaseFire New Jersey sends email blast with attachment showing side-by-side comparison of gun proposals of George Bush and Al Gore. Join the email blast list by going to http://www.ceasefirenj.org/ and clicking on “contact us.” Bush/Gore comparison is that by Million Mom March found at http://www.millionmommarch.org/vote/bush_and_gore.html
