Guns in the News
September 14, 2000

Angel Shamaya's commentary

In a Senate hearing on Wednesday, we get a clear example of the irrationality and utter lack of logic being exhibited by gun-fearing, gun-blaming "leaders".  The hearing was called to examine a Federal Trade Commission report released on Monday that said the entertainment industry aggressively targeted children for adult-rated products.

A senior analyst at the Violence Policy Center in Washington, Tom Diaz, told the hearing that "the growing availability of guns was the leading cause of violence".

By this same bit of flawed logic, the availability of women causes prostitution, the availability of sunshine causes sunburn, and the availability of microphones causes issue-retarded people like Diaz to make such ignorant statements. The good news is that we can laugh at this ding dong; the bad news is that most gun-fearing people don't stop and engage their brains long enough to see through his transparent, deceptive, logic-impoverished smear.

In gun-restricted (bans galore) South Africa, three armed robbers burst into St. Matthew's Anglican Traditional Church 20 minutes into the Sunday morning service, Sheena Shirley dropped to her knees and began praying the "Our Father."

According to Christian Science Monitor, as one of the robbers pressed the barrel of his gun against her salt-and-pepper hair, the retired schoolteacher paused from prayer long enough to dig into her purse and hand over her money.

Gov. Bush in Texas signed law allowing carry in churches just for this very reason - to give citizens a chance to assure that criminals cannot waltz in and out and do as they please.  Gun-fearing churchgoers in Texas benefit from the mere "possibility" that their more self-determinant (and unvictimizable) church members may be armed.

These South Africans are reaping the "benefits" of gun restrictions, much like the people in New York City, Chicago and D.C., our "gun free", violence-ravaged meccas for gun haters.

A convicted killer was executed by injection early Wednesday for the 1989 slaying of a man following a dispute over machine guns.

George "Baby" Harris, 41, was condemned for shooting to death Stanley "Hank" Willoughby inside a Kansas City crack house. Evidence clearly convicted him, and he was sentenced to death - a long time ago.

The expense of keeping this murderer alive for over a decade is unclear, but we are certain the money could have been put to some better use.
