TAMPA, FLORIDA - A 21-year-old man was arrested Wednesday after he got in a fight with his girlfriend and then was shot in the arm by her father, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.

Wayne Warren of 3008 Spillers Ave. was arrested after being treated at Tampa General Hospital. He was charged with battery, domestic violence and burglary of an occupied residence, said Lt. Rod Reder, a sheriff's office spokesman.

After Warren followed his girlfriend, Arlena Ottinger, 18, to her house at 2711 N. 60th St., he banged on doors and windows, Reder said.

Her father, Arl Ottinger III, 47, came out and told him to leave, Reder said. Warren refused and the two began arguing. Arl Ottinger then pointed a .38-caliber handgun at Warren and when Warren allegedly threatened him, Ottinger shot him in the arm, Reder said.

Warren was being held at the Orient Road jail; bail had not been set. Ottinger wasn't charged.

"He is defending his family," Reder said. "It appears it was justifiable."

About 11 a.m., Warren and Arlena Ottinger began arguing at Frank's Best Sandwiches, Reder said. She drove off with their 10-month-old son.

Warren followed her, Reder said, and when she stopped at 60th Street and Broadway Avenue, he ran to her car, broke a window and pulled her by the hair. Bystanders interceded and she ran to her home with the baby. Warren followed.

In May, Warren was charged with kidnapping and battery, but Arlena Ottinger declined to cooperate and the charges were dropped, Reder said.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
If you have always believed that everyone should play by the same rules and be judged by the same standards, that would have gotten you labeled a radical 50 years ago, a liberal 25 years ago, and a racist today. —THOMAS SOWELL
