Hotel Owner Shoots Robber

"Robbery Suspect Shot In Back By Hotel Owner"
by A staff report
The Tampa Tribune
August 30, 2001

TAMPA. FLORIDA -- A motel owner shot and gravely wounded a robbery suspect Wednesday as two others fled, police said.

Gerald L. Marsh, 25, of 3723 Powhattan Ave. was hospitalized in critical but stable condition with a gunshot wound to the back, police said.

Police said Marsh was one of three men who robbed a desk clerk at Economy Inn, 830 W. Kennedy Blvd., about 12:30 a.m.

The hotel owner saw the men pistol-whipping his desk clerk from a security monitor and confronted them in the parking lot, police said.

The owner fired several shots, and Marsh was struck in the back, police said.

"This guy acted in self-defense," police Lt. George McNamara said. The state attorney, he added, reviews such shootings to determine whether they were justified.

The other two men ran and hadn't been located as of late Wednesday. The Tampa Tribune is not naming the 40-year-old hotel owner while the suspects remain at large.

Police described one as 18 to 25 years old, black and about 6 foot 1. He wore a flowered shirt and denim shorts. The other suspect was described as a black man in a red shirt.

Police recovered a 1996 Dodge Intrepid at the scene.

Anyone with information is asked to call Tampa police at (813) 276-3200.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Laws that forbid the carrying of arms disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man. — Thomas Jefferson, quoting Cesare Beccaria in On Crimes and punishment (1764).
