.50 CALIBER LIARS
Once again the Tribune pays tribute to committed
gun prohibitionist Tom Diaz of Violence Policy Center, presenting his distortions
as if they merit legitimizing.
The .50 caliber rifle's cartridge is "capable
of piercing airline fuel tanks from a mile away," you tell us, but what
you fail to mention is that few people on the planet can hit even a stationary
target at that distance with the gun.
You tell us that the gun was "modified for
U.S. Military purposes in 1983," but you're off by 60 years. It was developed
at the request of General John Pershing, just after World War I -- and has been
used in every war since, owned by civilians for just as long.
You tell us that bin Laden "legally purchased
25 of the rifles in 1989 in the United States to help combat the Soviet occupation
in Afghanistan, according to the U.S. Justice Department," but what you
fail to mention is that they purchased the guns from the federal government.
Seems like a fairly important omission from your report, wouldn't you say?
Your report failed to mention the many other
distorted myths Diaz and his gun prohibitionist friends are spreading about
the gun:
* U.S. Rep. Henry Waxman tells us the gun "can
shoot down airplanes" even though its maximum distance beyond all accuracy
couldn't even approach the distance at which airplanes fly, let alone hit a
plane flying 600 miles per hour.
* U.S. Rep. Rod Blagojevich and Sen. Dianne Feinstein,
who introduced the federal legislation you are promoting, tell us there is "no
legitimate use" for this gun even though people compete with it and shoot
it recreationally all across America without even a single recorded accident
and only one crime committed with one in 60 years.
"You have to think about what this gun can
do," squeals Tom Diaz, hoping you will buy his ruse while he connives his
true, stated mission: to ban civilian possession of firearms.
You report that Arthur Hayhoe, executive director
of the Tampa-based Florida Coalition to Stop Gun Violence said, "This weapon
could easily be turned against us."
Guess what: So can the "free press".
Embarrassed that the Tribune got so suckered
by these people,
