More Guns in Virginia

From: "Chris Brose" <krleese@cox-internet.com>

Subject: more guns in Virginia

[Here's one I sent to the Letters to the Editor at the Virginia Pilot in response to the 11/27 editorial about more guns being purchased and carried. http://www.pilotonline.com/opinion/op1127edc.html
Letters are sent through the website, so no header. -author]

The writer of the anonymous 11/27 editorial is truly paranoid. He (she) assumes that (a) people are buying guns because of terrorism, and (b) more guns make it more likely that that traffic incidents will escalate into mass murders. Not.

The 9/11 attacks made a lot of people face their own mortality, but few people are getting guns now for the purpose of fighting terrorists. People have simply realized that they are responsible for their own safety and are being more proactive.

And that traffic incident nonsense has been tried in every state where concealed carry has been debated. And in more than 30 states where concealed carry is legal, such escalations HAVE NEVER HAPPENED. So fear of such escalation is irrational... making the author paranoid.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
For, in principle, there is no difference between a law prohibiting the wearing of concealed arms, and a law forbidding the wearing such as are exposed; and if the former be unconstitutional, the latter must be so likewise. But it should not be forgotten, that it is not only a part of the right that is secured by the constitution; it is the right entire and complete, as it existed at the adoption of the constitution; and if any portion of that right be impaired, immaterial how small the part may be, and immaterial the order of time at which it be done, it is equally forbidden by the constitution. [Bliss vs. Commonwealth, 12 Ky. (2 Litt.) 90, at 92, and 93, 13 Am. Dec. 251 (1822)
