Make a Wish?
Okay, I wish you would wake up.
Vermilion, OH - A national organization known
for granting the wishes of terminally ill children has crossed hunting off the
its list of possible requests. The Make-A-Wish Foundation recently announced a
new policy that will prohibit the granting of any request that involves the use
of firearms or other weapons. The Foundation gained national attention in 1996
for granting an Alaska brown bear hunt to a Minnesota teenager, and has since
granted several other hunts to ill children.
Make-A-Wish has stated that it will not turn
children away who request hunts, but will instead try to grant the child's
alternate wish. If that's not possible, an informal agreement has been reached
with Safari Club International (http://www.safariclub.org)
to refer those who wish to hunt. Make-A-Wish has stressed, however, that the
referrals and hunts will occur independent of the Foundation.
Hunting associations such as the International
Bowhunting Organization (IBO), that have donated hundreds of thousands of
dollars to Make-A-Wish, are now asking that hunters distance themselves from the
