Responses to 'No weapons policy not just for kids on campus'

These letters were originally published on this website October 26, 2000

In reference to article found here: http://www.al.com/news/mobile/Oct2000/26-a408894a.html...

To Whom It May Concern:

What world do you live in?

In your editorial dated, 10/26/2000, titled, "'No weapons' policy not just for kids on campus" you asserted that a teacher who LEGALLY carried a firearm should be fired.

Why?

Is she not deserving of the right to life? Why should she be disarmed?

Does she deserve to risk rape or assault simply because you are uncomfortable with firearms?

She's a responsible, law abiding adult who is completely within her rights to carry a firearm. Why then should she be fired?

If a student steals her gun, then the student commits a crime. Punish the student after the fact. But, do not disarm a woman who needs to protect herself simply because you're afraid of what *might* happen. That's totally idiotic.

Let me be crystal clear here. Should somebody decide to attack her, nobody else will be around to defend her. She will get hurt unless she has the means to defend herself.

Guns are not evil objects. If you leave it on the table top, it will stay there. It won't sprout legs and go shoot somebody. Likewise, it won't take over some teenager's mind and convince him or her to go crazy and shoot others. Were that the case, my own gun would be considered defective.

Open your eyes to the real world. Ultimately, the safety of your person is up to YOU. Not anyone else.

Sincerely,

"Why would an adult carry a gun on campus in the first place?"

Because idiots have proclaimed them to be safe zones for assaults, as evidenced at Columbine High and too damned many others.
