Suspect shot dead during robbery at Phoenix topless bar

The manager of a Phoenix topless bar opened fire on a group of robbers Wednesday night, killing one of them and inadvertently injuring one of his own dancers, authorities said.

The three or four other robbers fled and remain at large as police continue a manhunt for them today.

The incident unfolded about 9 p.m. when four to five men in their early 20s walked into Mustang Sally's Cabaret and Bar Grill near 35th Avenue and Thomas Road carrying guns, said Sgt. Randy Force, a police spokesman.

The men demanded cash and jewelry from patrons; one of them fired a single shot to grab people's attention as he snatched money from the business cash register. There were about 35 patrons and employees inside Mustang Sally's at the time, authorities said.

As the men continued to rob customers, the manager of the bar reached for his gun and began shooting, fatally striking one of the suspects, identified by police today as Lindon Derell Webb, 30. One of the manager's shots also grazed the shoulder of a dancer.

Phoenix police declined today to release the names of the manager or the injured dancer. No arrests have been made.

Force said the manager wasn't arrested or charged in the shooting, but he admonished other business operators to avoid copying what the manager did.

"When someone is robbing an establishment," Force said, "the best thing to do is to get the robbers out as quickly as possible without endangering anyone. The whole situation could have ended up worse than it already has."
