JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA -- What started as just another day for a westside store owner turned into a frightening experience, but quick actions ended with a suspect caught.

Police say 18-year-old Doran Moore attempted to rob the Holiday Grocery while an accomplice waited in a car. Police say that he entered with a weapon in hand, but instead of returning with a pocketful of cash, he left with a gunshot wound to his leg. The owner of the store took action to defend his store with his own gun.

"He saw the suspect had a hood over his head as he entered the business and he saw a gun in the suspect's hand so he was armed immediately," Jacksonville sheriff's officer Wayne Turner said.

Police say that the wounded suspect then took off in this getaway car. It did not take long for police to find the suspect and the car on the north side, miles from the grocery store. The clue was a call that came in for help, a man reporting a gunshot wound and claiming the wound came after he was robbed. But the police were not fooled.

"We found a blood trail leading away from the business and then a short time later we had the suspect calling in from another zone saying that he had been robbed and that matched the description of the suspect driving the same car," Turner said.

Police sent the suspect to the hospital and arrested the man they say drove the getaway car. The owner of the Holiday Grocery said that he had owned the store for just two weeks He did not wish to tell his story on camera. While police say he was within his right to defend his store, they don't encourage this type of self-defense.

"We've always said let them have the money, which is probably the safest thing to do," Turner said.

Moore remains in stable condition at Shands Jacksonville. Police have charged him with armed robbery.

You need only reflect that one of the best ways to get yourself a reputation as a dangerous citizen these days is to go about repeating the very phrases which our founding fathers used in the struggle for independence. —CHARLES A. BEARD
