NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA -- A man was shot to death in Harahan early Tuesday morning after he tried to steal a truck, police say.

The suspect tried to steal the truck out of a driveway in the 300 block of Tudor Avenue, police say.

The owner, Elmore Jeannesonne, 30, heard his truck engine start up and came outside to investigate.

When he saw the suspect behind the wheel, Jeannesonne jumped into the back of the truck, climbed into the cab through the sliding window and a struggle ensued, police say.

When the suspect told Jeannesonne that he had a gun, Jeannesonne grabbed his own gun from under the truck seat and shot the man, police say.

The suspect died at the scene.
