"Trail Creek burglary foiled, suspect wounded"
By Lee Schelling, News-Dispatch

TRAIL CREEK, Indiana — A Trail Creek man was reported uninjured Wednesday after he apparently fended off the burglary of his home by possibly shooting one of three alleged burglars.

The incident occurred shortly after 2 p.m. at 140 Harding Ave. in Trail Creek.

Trail Creek Chief Marshal Skip Pierce said the investigation was on-going and he was releasing few details until later today about the situation.

Pierce confirmed that three people were taken into custody — an adult and two juveniles. One of the three was wounded during the incident, he said.

Pierce said the injury was not life-threatening, but the person was taken to a hospital.

Other police sources said the homeowner, Mark Neitzel, was at his home when the three alleged burglars entered the property.

One of the alleged burglars was shot in the leg, possibly by Neitzel, police said.

Trail Creek, Michigan City and LaPorte County Police, along with County Prosecutor Robert Beckman, Chief Deputy Prosecutor Atley Price and LaPorte County Emergency Medical Service responded to the scene.

Trail Creek police are leading the investigation.

Police said they spent a few hours interviewing witnesses Wednesday following the incident.
