Home invader shot by homeowner goes to jail

Wounded suspect 'critical'; 2nd man sought in robbery
By Hector Gutierrez, Rocky Mountain News Staff Writer

A man shot when he allegedly invaded a southwest Denver home during a weekend robbery remained in critical condition Tuesday.

Another suspect in the Sunday evening robbery and gun battle fled on foot, and Denver police continued to search for him Tuesday.

Sean Rodriguez was being treated for a gunshot wound to the abdomen, a hospital spokeswoman said. Rodriguez, 20, of Englewood, was on a police hold at Denver Health Medical Center for investigation of aggravated robbery and burglary.

Detectives were still trying to sort out the sequence of events and determine which of the family members inside the Barnum home opened fire on Rodriguez and his alleged accomplice, Sgt. Tony Lombard said. They have not determined if the shooter was "within their rights," he said.

Detectives also are trying to determine whether Rodriguez and his alleged accomplice may have been involved in other home invasion robberies, Lombard said.

The robbery victims, which included a husband, wife, and their two sons, told detectives that Rodriguez and the other attacker entered through the front door about 7:40 p.m. Sunday. The intruders brandished handguns, and pointed the weapons at the father, demanding cash and property.

Police said the robbers then took some property from the house and fled. Family members pursued the robbers out the front door and one of them grabbed a firearm, Lt. Jon Priest said.

A gun battle followed, Priest said.

Officers eventually discovered the wounded Rodriguez at another location, Priest said.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The right of the people to keep and bear arms has been recognized by the General Government; but the best security of that right after all is, the military spirit, that taste for martial exercises, which has always distinguished the free citizens of these States....Such men form the best barrier to the liberties of America — Gazette of the United States, October 14, 1789.
