BIG TIMBER, MONTANA – A coroner’s inquest will be held to determine whether a homeowner was justified in shooting a man who entered his home through an unlocked door, authorities said Tuesday.

The Sweetgrass County sheriff’s office is investigating the shooting death Sunday of a 37-year-old man at 32 McCloud St.

Sheriff Dan Tronrud said Tuesday that the homeowner, a 60-year-old man, has not been arrested.

Tronrud described the victim as a 37-year-old transient who was carrying identification from Arkansas. He declined to release the names of either man.

The shooting occurred at about 7 p.m. when the man walked into the home through an unlocked door, Tronrud said. The man was shot once with a handgun. He was taken to Pioneer Medical Center in Big Timber, then flown to a hospital in Billings where he died a short time later.

Tronrud said authorities have not been able to find any of the man’s relatives.

The intruder was not armed, Tronrud said. He declined to say whether the two men spoke before the shooting or whether the homeowner was threatened.
