DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA -- A clerk at an Amoco gas station responded to an armed holdup Monday morning by grabbing his shotgun, chasing a man suspected of robbery through a used-car lot and shooting the man in the face and chest, police said.

The clerk was being questioned Monday afternoon by Durham police, and the wounded man was transferred to Duke University Medical Center.

Police had no information on his condition or whether charges had been filed.

Police were called at 11:01 a.m. Monday to an armed robbery at the Amoco station at 2900 Chapel Hill Blvd., police spokesman Lt. Ed Sarvis said. Police arrived to find the man suspected of robbery lying nearly a block away in the 2800 block of Nation Avenue with wounds to his face and chest.

Two windows in a red Nissan pickup truck were blown out. Police said the clerk was armed with a shotgun and the man suspected of robbery was armed with a handgun.

The investigation continued Monday afternoon.
