Killing Mosquitos

Subject: Re: Lady Bought a gun

Dear Mr. Grisamore,

I read your story of January 27th, 2002, entitled, "Lady Bought a Gun," with quite a bit of interest. It seems the woman in question made the reasonable choice to be responsible for her own self-defense, an action which, if more people took it, would make our society more than a little safer. However, one line in your story just jumped out at me:

"She is not your typical gun owner. She is a not a pistol-packin' mama. She is not a violent or vindictive person. She has never killed anything bigger than a mosquito."

That's an interesting statement. It implies your "typical" gun owner is a violent, vindictive person who regularly kills things "bigger than a mosquito."

Was it just a mis-chosen statement, or later placed there by your editor? Maybe you've read too much material from the Violence Policy Center, and Handgun Control, Inc, and it just kind of "popped in there" as the right thing to say? Perhaps you're trying to demonize "typical" gun owners in the mind of the public?

I'm interested to hear your response on this. It just didn't fit in with the tone of the rest of your story.

Thank you for your time,

John M. Kupski

[The American Colonies were] all democratic governments, where the power is in the hands of the people and where there is not the least difficulty or jealousy about putting arms into the hands of every man in the country. [European countries should not] be ignorant of the strength and the force of such a form of government and how strenuously and almost wonderfully people living under one have sometimes exerted themselves in defence of their rights and liberties and how fatally it has ended with many a man and many a state who have entered into quarrels, wars and contests with them.
