In my recent report, CA Attorney General Thumbs Nose at Ashcroft and Second Amendment, I indicated in an addendum that I had contacted
Bill Lockyer's
challenger in the upcoming Nov. 5 election, State Senator Dick Ackerman.
I asked if he agreed with John Ashcroft's legal opinion
that "the text and the original intent of the Second Amendment clearly protect the right of individuals to keep and bear firearms"; and if he would, if elected, add his name to the
letter
signed by 18 state attorneys general in support of Mr. Ashcroft's "interpretation and enforcement of the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution."
I received the following response from Paul Dress, Campaign Manager, Ackerman for Attorney General 2002:
"Mr. Codrea:
"Thank you for your email regarding Senator Ackerman's position on 2nd Amendment rights.
"Senator Ackerman is a staunch supporter of the 2nd Amendment. He regularly receives an 'A' rating from the NRA, meaning his votes in the legislature are consistent with the views of the NRA. Furthermore, Sen. Ackerman agrees with the opinion issued by U.S. Attorney General Ashcroft…Sen. Ackerman will sign the letter agreeing with U.S. Attorney General Ashcroft's interpretation of the 2nd Amendment, should he be elected Attorney General."
Please pass this information along to your gun-owning friends in California who
vote. Senator Ackerman's website is at www.ackermanforag.com, and you can contact him at
dackerman@ackermanforag.com.
While you're at it, you might also want to contact Bill Lockyer
and let him know what you think of HIS position
on the Second Amendment.
