To Make A Wish Foundation
by Robert Ellis

Originally published on this website June 6, 2000

Dear Friends at Make-a-Wish Foundation,

If it is true that Make-a Wish foundation will no longer assist children who wish to hunt or engage in other responsible firearms related activities, then it is the case, I regret to inform you, that I, and many friends and associates ,will no longer consider gifts to Make-a-Wish Foundation. Putting aside political considerations, it is important to recognize that in this country, the freedom to possess and use firearms responsibly still exists and is considered by millions of citizens to be appropriate family sport and recreation.

The United States Olympic Shooting Team, for example, continues to participate and excel in more than a dozen shooting events in international competitions. It is also the case that millions of citizens use firearms annually to deter criminal action, and prevent themselves from becoming victims of the criminal acts of those who behave irresponsibly. I am saddened to have heard about your decision to discourage your clients from enjoying firearms related activities. It is through education and high-profile publicity of the responsible use of firearms that people will understand the importance of firearms in contemporary America. As a veteran police officer, I can attest to the value of having an armed and well-behaved population to assist in crime prevention and public safety. It is most unfortunate that the criminal use of firearms makes the headline news, thereby presenting a distorted perspective of the usefulness of firearms in our society.

I would urge the members of your board of directors to read the book "More Guns, Less Crime" by Professor Dr. John Lott, Jr. This book is the definitive study of the value of firearms in the hands of the general population. After reading the book, I would hope that your board will reconsider the important place of firearms in our society, and then will reconsider its decision regarding firearms related activities for your clients. To deny a child that opportunity, if that is the child's wish, is most unkind.

Yours very truly.

Robert Ellis

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Today the taxing power, rather than chattel slavery, is the instrument by which the parasitical element of the population subsists. And that element, which includes politicians, panics at the slightest reduction in the state's power to plunder. Once you start liberating taxpayers, even a little tiny bit, nobody knows where it may end. —Joseph Sobran
