"Once just a club for red-blooded American gun owners, the National Rifle Association has become a savvy global lobby. It presses for gun rights at the United Nations. It assists pro-gun campaigns from Sydney to São Paulo. And it has found that its message—loving freedom means loving guns—translates into almost every language."

"The ad starts with a sober, simulated news report. A news anchor, looking directly into the camera, warns viewers about Brazil’s proposed gun ban. 'People are misrepresenting the disarmament issue,' she says. 'It won’t disarm criminals.' ..." ...

One case which is very sensitive for many of us, a case called Rybar, where he dealt -- he said that -- struck down a law having to do with the possession and transfer of fully automatic machine guns, when the Miller case in the 1930s had clearly said that it was legal for the Congress to regulate these weapons under the Second Amendment." ...

"I covered MTV’s I’m a gun owner several times. A new development is that Jane, a woman who claims to be the mother of the girl featured on MTV’s I’m a gun owner, left a long comment here. She says MTV lied to her daughter and misrepresented many events, notably that she hung up her gun. She did not. Good. Jane wants to get the message out, so I’ll reprint it here:"

"When the Consumer Product Safety Council tested and failed 30 of the 32 then-available trigger and cable locks for guns, it opened the door for a new technology ... an entirely new, patented child safety technology for firearms is now available to every parent, grandparent, and responsible gun owner: the Child Guard CS-100."

"According to J. Terry Riebling ... 'When we decided to develop a new technology that would keep kids safe from firearms, we based our design on the features, function, and benefits that we know gun owners, shooters, and hunters need and want. We own firearms and we’re hunters who have also shot competitively, so we feel we understand what our buyers are looking for in a safety mechanism.'" ...

"Dear Gun Haters,"

"I am writing this letter as a young, female pistol-packing mama. I am a staunch defender of my right to bear arms, despite the fact that I do not belong to a militia group. This does not mean that I don't support gun control, because I do. But even with gun controls in place, I still want to protect my right to defend myself, my home, and my family."

"I think that one of the most important aspects of gun ownership is gun education. Over the last few weeks, I have made a point to go to the range and hone my skills as a capable gun fanatic. I even took my two best girlfriends with me so that I could teach them the proper way to carry, load, and fire a semi-automatic handgun. ..." ...

CT: Gun Control Could Help Track Down Dog's Killer

FULL TEXT BELOW:

If the gun used to kill Dallas, the Labrador retriever, had been registered, within hours that gun could have been traced to its owner. (“Griswold family grieving after dog is shot and killed,” Dec. 27.)

It was not registered because the National Rifle Association has prevented, through its lobby, every attempt to make that provision and others into a law.

Besides making it possible to trace a gun, a registered firearms law could make an imbecile think twice before committing a crime.

Robert Griswold, senior member of the NRA, has put up a $1,000 reward to find the responsible person. That's all very well, but it's just guilt money. Shame on Mr. Griswold and his NRA.

"Following an unprecedented series of public shootings in Toronto, there is talk about stiffening penalties for having or using unlicensed handguns. In general, I support this idea, but my economics background reminds me of an important principle that applies: a fair probability of getting caught is always a greater deterrent than a stiff penalty alone. To confirm this intuitively, ask yourself about the impact on your highway-driving habits of a tripling of fines alone versus a tripling of the number of police patrolling highways enforcing existing fines."

"The problem is, in Toronto, the probability of getting caught for the kind reckless, brutal crime we have experienced many times now is close to zero. ..." ...

Two teenage boys were swaying back and forth in a Toronto streetcar, .22 rifles propped between their knees, headed for the dump to do some shooting. A police officer boarded and walked past them, eyed the two rifles, and said in a firm, fatherly voice, 'Those wouldn't be loaded now, would they, boys?'"
