"DEAR DR. BROTHERS: I recently moved to a new area of the country, in which it is very common for households to have a rifle or handgun for hunting or personal protection. I have never had any exposure to weapons at all and have always been very frightened of them. ... Anyway, my husband brought one home after I reluctantly agreed (we do have a problem with predatory wild animals at our new farm), but I find myself being very nervous about just having it. I would never want to use it. Is this strong a reaction normal? -- D.K."

"DEAR D.K.: I would say that it is quite normal and even smart to be afraid of any dangerous weapon that could kill you or a member of your family. ..." ...

"U.S. Rep. Cliff Stearns' (R-Fla.) national Right-to-Carry (RTC) reciprocity bill, H.R. 4547, would allow any person with a valid concealed firearm carrying permit or license, issued by a state, to carry a concealed firearm in any other state, as follows: In states that issue concealed firearm permits, a state's laws governing where concealed firearms may be carried would apply within its own borders. In states that do not issue carry permits, a federal 'bright-line' standard would [apply] ... The bill would not create a federal licensing system; it would require the states to recognize each others' carry permits, just as they recognize drivers' licenses and carry permits held by armored car guards ..." ...

"On February 7, Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA) introduced legislation to eliminate the requirement in the 1996 Welfare Reform Bill that requires hunters and fishermen to furnish their social security numbers when getting a license."

"'Across America, hunting and fishing is an age old heritage that is passed on from one generation to the next. Our outdoor sportsmen should not be required to surrender sensitive information and risk being victims of identity theft to preserve this legacy. This is much needed reform and the NRA would like to thank Senator Santorum for leading this effort in the United States Senate,' said NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox." ...

Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot and injured a man during a weekend quail hunting trip in Texas, his spokeswoman said Sunday.

Harry Whittington, 78, was "alert and doing fine" after Cheney sprayed Whittington with shotgun pellets on Saturday at the Armstrong Ranch in south Texas, said property owner Katharine Armstrong.

Armstrong said Cheney turned to shoot a bird and accidentally hit Whittington. She said Whittington was taken to Corpus Christi Memorial Hospital by ambulance.

Cheney's spokeswoman, Lea Anne McBride, said the vice president was with Whittington, a lawyer from Austin, Texas, and his wife at the hospital on Sunday afternoon.

James and Sarah Brady made comments today related to Vice President Cheney's reportedly accidental shooting yesterday in Texas.

"Now I understand why Dick Cheney keeps asking me to go hunting with him," said Jim Brady. "I had a friend once who accidentally shot pellets into his dog - and I thought he was an idiot."

"I've thought Cheney was scary for a long time," Sarah Brady said. "Now I know I was right to be nervous."

"Bottom ejection on a Remington shotgun? An auto-loading Winchester centerfire rifle? Yes, on both questions."

"It's been more than 30 years since Winchester had a centerfire rifle that was an auto-loader, and I can't remember a Remington pump or auto-loading shotgun that didn't eject through a port on the side of the receiver. There could have been a Remington with bottom ejection, but it was before my time."

"Yet, those two firearms were among the many unveiled to the outdoors media this week during a prelude to the Shooting, Hunting and Outdoors Trade (SHOT) Show." ...

"A Veneta man who shot and killed an intruder early Friday acted in self-defense and will not be charged with a crime, the Lane County district attorney said."

"Tony Gilbert Hernandez, 58, shot the intruder at least twice with a 12-gauge shotgun as the man beat him with a collapsible metal baton, investigators said."

"The baton left deep cuts in Hernandez's scalp that had to be stapled shut at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene. He also had injuries on his back."

"'This is what we would call self defense,' District Attorney Doug Harcleroad said. 'You're allowed to use deadly physical force under Oregon law when you're in fear for yourself or your property.'" ...

"Not satisfied to facilitate the carrying of concealed deadly weapons or to hide the public records of those authorized to carry concealed, the legislature is about to encourage the carrying of guns onto school system property." ...

"How do the NRA and its friends ... defend such a measure? ... "If a city banned all handguns, the city officials there would totally conflict with the states concealed carry law, rendering an individuals statewide license useless. What would that city do if the county sheriff issued a license to someone from their city?"

"This is why House Bill 347 was introduced at the Ohio Statehouse on January 10. It is written to provide clearer and more sensible language for concealed carry. It also contains language stating that a municipality cannot further regulate firearm sales or ownership."

"If the National Rifle Association told Florida lawmakers to squat on their haunches and bark like dogs, a chorus of eager howls would echo from the House to the Senate. No demand by chief NRA Tallahassee lobbyist Marion Hammer -- a.k.a. She Who Must Be Obeyed -- is too outrageous; from holding police officers criminally liable for the crime of keeping gun ownership records to exempting shooting ranges from water pollution laws."

FULL TEXT BELOW:

A bill rocketing through the Statehouse could give you greater rights to defend yourself with deadly force. It's called the "Protection of persons and property act."

It passed the House unanimously... now it's in the Senate.

If it passes there, the new law would let you use deadly force against an intruder or attacker in your home or vehicle.

There are exceptions but, generally speaking, if the bill becomes law, and if you lawfully use deadly force... you would be immune from criminal prosecution and may not be arrested.

A number of local House members are sponsors, including Marty Coates of Florence, Murrell Smith of Sumter, Jim Battle of Marion, Ted Vick of Chesterfield and Thad Viers of Socastee.

"'I think this could be a tremendous tool for law enforcement,' said Scott Miller, a city attorney who drafted the changes to the law. ...'" ...

"But Miller confirmed the current law contains a gray area because it makes it illegal to have a firearm in 'close proximity' to a bar or restaurant that serves liquor, but it does not define close proximity. "For a law enforcement agency that works hard to be invisible, the Federal Air Marshals have been generating a lot of attention lately. On Thursday, two of the agency's several thousand highly trained traveling armed guards were taken into custody in Houston. Although the US Attorney's office would not comment beyond acknowledging that the Air Marshals were arrested by agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Homeland Security's Inspector General's office, Government sources tell TIME that the two Air Marshals, are allegedly involved with the possession or transportation of cocaine, and may have been paid several thousand dollars to move the drugs."
