In a recent post, Old Ugly, I wrote about Alaskan bear guide Phil Shoemaker’s famous rifle, Old Ugly. In the photo of Old Ugly is a stunningly engraved Ruger New Model mid-frame flat-top Blackhawk below the rifle. For as homely as Old Ugly is, the custom handgun is beautiful.
I mentioned in the article that the owners couldn’t be as different as the guns themselves. This wasn’t meant to be derogatory in any way, but rather a compliment. |

Second Amendment rights advocate Kyle Rittenhouse disappeared from the limelight for a bit to make incredible strides in his own life — but he’s back and more motivated than ever to keep up the good fight.
“I was just done with the media. I was done with the hate. I was done with the lies being pushed against me. It was a lot that I was dealing with. And then I moved to Florida. I took that hiatus. I met my beautiful wife, Bella. And we moved to Colorado,” Rittenhouse tells BlazeTV host Sara Gonzales at AmFest.
However, after the events of September 10, Rittenhouse knew it was time “to get back into the fight.” |

Effective January 1, Illinois gun owners are required to report a stolen or lost gun within 48 hours of learning it’s missing.
The Safe Gun Storage Act (SB0008) reduces the reporting time from the previous 72-hour window. Failure to report within 48 hours, or failure to properly secure firearms, can lead to civil penalties, including fines up to $10,000 if the stolen gun is used in a crime. The owner is required to report the last know location of the gun, caliber, make, model and serial number. If a gun owner fails to report a lost firearm two or more times, their Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) could be revoked. |

Our country was much more troubled and dangerous when Joe Biden was president, but thankfully times have changed, according to several current and former firearm instructors.
“There was a lot more concern about how things were going to go,” said Mike Magowan, chief operations officer for Florida’s Self Defense Emporium. “There’s not as much panic now as there was then.”
Magowan has taught more than 30,000 students how to shoot safely over his 30-year career. He started as a sniper in the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division and has earned a host of national certifications and accreditations. |

A St. Louis lawmaker has filed a bill aimed at temporarily removing firearms from people in the middle of a mental health crisis.
Democratic Representative Steve Butz told Missourinet that the measure would give families and law enforcement a critical tool to prevent tragedies.
“120 days,” said Butz. “That’s the maximum length of time and a resident member of the household, so it’s not an estranged boyfriend or girlfriend or fiancé or somebody who might have a grudge against someone. It’s someone who you actually live with making this request.” |

Let us concede that gun rights advocates have won the argument: guns don’t kill people, people do.
However, there is a certain class of people that merit a greater share of the blame for the mass casualty events our communities have endured. For lack of a more encompassing term let’s call them, “gun owners”. As well, we must acknowledge that gun owners are largely responsible (by commission and omission) for the constant blood letting since Sandy Hook (as of 16 Aug. 2025 41,023 people have perished since the 14 Dec. 2012 Newtown, Conn. massacre). |

From changing vaccine requirements to eliminating property taxes, the upcoming Florida Legislative Session is expected to be a hectic 60 days for state lawmakers.
The session, which is set to start on Jan. 13, will go over a variety of bills — some of which have been a hot topic of discussion in recent months.
Here’s a breakdown of some of the proposed legislation.
Lower legal age to own, purchase guns Some lawmakers are working to lower the age for buying firearms.
Under current law, people have to be at least 21 to buy a gun. But for some who are in law enforcement or a service member, they can purchase certain firearms at 18. |

Gun safety legislation will also be enforced next year, requiring that all handguns and rifles must be universally registered with state approval by manufacturers and owners. This measure includes stricter regulations on ghost guns and three-D printed weapons. As Rep. Williams put it, “All handguns and rifles must be universally registered with state approval by manufacturers and owners… as well as stricter regulations on ghost guns and three-D printed weapons.” He also commented on ongoing challenges in enforcing these laws, stating, “We’re going as far as we can go; some folks have challenged it probably in the supreme court, but we stand on solid ground. We have to lean up these ghost guns and get the violence away.” |
