The hunter who shot a 66-year-old woman in Norton yesterday after apparently mistaking one of her dogs for a deer is a Massachusetts state trooper, a State Police spokesman said today.
The spokesman, David Procopio, confirmed that the hunter is an active trooper.
Norton police identified him as John Bergeron, 50, of Norton, and identied the woman as Cheryl Blair, also of Norton.
“It was an accidental shooting,” Procopio said in a phone interview, adding that Bergeron called 911 and went to Blair and administered medical aid while waiting for emergency personnel to arrive.
Norton police Lieutenant Todd Jackson said this morning that Blair was shot once in the abdomen with a black powder rifle.

Authorities are investigating whether friendly fire killed a hero ATF agent trying to stop a drug-addled ex-con from robbing a Long Island pharmacy, sources told The Post yesterday.
Officials said off-duty Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Agent John Capano, 51, a married father of two teens, was trying to foil a stickup at Charlie’s Family Pharmacy in Seaford on Saturday when a retired Nassau County police lieutenant and off-duty NYPD cop in a nearby deli heard there was a robbery in progress and the two armed men ran over.
Within seconds, Capano and career thug James McGoey, 43, lay dead outside the drugstore amid bottles of stolen pills.

A teen carjacker was shot and killed after trying to rob an off-duty cop in Newark this morning, the second time in a month a car thief was shot trying to hold up police officers in the New Jersey city.
Vincent Owens, 17, was shot at least once after trying rob the officer around 5:15 a.m., and was then thrown from a getaway car that crashed while trying to flee, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray said.
Owens died a short time later at a hospital.

Preliminary findings in the investigation of an off-duty federal law-enforcement agent killed while trying to stop an armed robbery at a Long Island pharmacy suggests that the fatal shot was fired by a retired Nassau County police lieutenant, law-enforcement officials said Monday.
John Capano, a 51-year-old senior special agent for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives, had come to Charlie's Family Pharmacy in Seaford on Saturday afternoon to pick up cancer medication for his father, when a man armed with a pellet gun entered the pharmacy demanding painkillers and cash.

The husband of a Massachusetts woman shot by an off-duty state trooper hunting deer after dark is questioning the trooper's target identification.
The Boston Herald reports ( http://bit.ly/u0GOol) the trooper apologized to the woman's family. But the woman's husband also is a hunter and says hunters need to pay attention and know their targets.
Norton police say 66-year-old Cheryl Blair was walking her two dogs Saturday a quarter-mile into a wooded area when neighbor John Bergeron mistook her pets for a deer. Police say Bergeron called 911 to get help after the shooting.

A man who was being sought in the shooting of four people at a New Year's party in South King County early Sunday is suspected in the fatal shooting of a park ranger in Mount Rainier National Park later in the morning. ...
Nearly eight hours earlier, King County sheriff's deputies responded to shots fired at a party in Skyway, where an early-morning session of "show and tell" with guns among several armed partygoers devolved into a shootout, according to detectives.
Four people were shot, and three people fled the scene. One of them was identified as Benjamin Colton Barnes, 24.
Kevin Bacher, a spokesman for Mount Rainier National Park, said the vehicle recovered at the scene of Anderson's shooting was registered to Barnes.

Police say a 66-year-old woman walking her two dogs just after sunset on Saturday was shot and wounded by a hunter who claimed that he thought she was a deer.
The hunter is State Trooper John Bergeron who was off-duty at the time.
Police say the woman was on a wooded path Saturday evening when Bergeron fired a single shot at her.
State Police said in a statement that Bergeron, an experienced hunter who lives in the area, did not see the victim, and mistook the tails of her two dogs as the tail of a deer.
State regulations allow deer hunting until 30 minutes after sunset.
Sunset on Sunday was at 4:21 p.m.
Police say the shooting took place around 5 p.m., but did not give an exact time. |

"The governor is blowing this all out of proportion for political gain," Rep. Al Baldasaro, R-Londonderry, said.
Baldasaro is a sponsor of HB 334 and supports the other bills.
He said HB 334 brings state colleges and universities into line with existing state law, while letting private colleges and universities keep their own policies.
New Hampshire law allows people to openly carry guns, Baldasaro pointed out. They must obtain a permit from police if they wish to conceal the gun under clothing or in a vehicle, he said.

New Hampshire could become the fourth state to eliminate the need for a permit to carry concealed, loaded guns anyplace not prohibited by law under legislation before the House and Senate.
The House could vote as early as this week on a bill to make the permits optional so gun owners could travel to states with reciprocal permit agreements. |

Lately, I’ve been thinking more about firearms after strong reaction I had to a recent column about travelers who were stopped at airport security checkpoints for trying to carry guns onboard planes. I even heard from a few readers who believe that the relaxation of so-called right-to-carry gun laws in many states ought to expand federally to allow responsible, legal permit-holders to carry firearms on airplanes. |
