President Donald Trump's stance on gun rights and the Second Amendment has been thrust into the spotlight after the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti in Minnesota.
On Jan. 24, Pretti was at an immigration enforcement protest in Minneapolis when he was wrestled to the ground, shot and killed by Border Patrol officers. Federal officials have defended the shooting of Pretti, an ICU nurse who treated veterans, saying he brought a gun to the protest to "kill law enforcement." Bystander footage shows Pretti holding his phone, not a gun, before being wrestled to the ground. |

Is it legal to carry a gun during a protest? President Donald Trump questioned it after federal agents shot and killed 37-year-old nurse Alex Pretti in Minneapolis on Saturday, Jan. 24, triggering widespread pushback and protests.
Pretti was licensed to carry the gun he reportedly had on him at the time but several videos from witnesses appear to show that he never brandished it and was disarmed by an agent and on the ground before he was shot multiple times.
When a reporter asked Trump Tuesday if he thought Pretti was there planning to kill cops, as Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem suggested within hours of his death, Trump said no. |

Georgia’s stand-your-ground law law shapes how claims of self-defense are evaluated, but it does not create blanket immunity after a violent encounter. Even when criminal charges are avoided or dismissed, the law leaves significant exposure behind legally and otherwise.
Georgia does not have a single statute titled “Stand Your Ground.” These three statutes set the ground rules courts use when deciding whether a person’s use of force was justified. |

Samuel Farrington is a college student and New Hampshire state representative who believes that public universities should allow students to exercise their Second Amendment rights.
Farrington, a Republican and a senior at the University of New Hampshire, recently introduced a “campus carry” bill in the state House to require just that. The bill would prohibit public colleges and universities from “regulating the possession or carrying of firearms and non-lethal weapons on campus.”
He told The College Fix he wrote the bill because he felt unfairly prohibited from exercising his rights. |

A Siskiyou County man has been working to allow the open carry of firearms in California. He won his case, however, it's more complicated than that.
Self-described Second Amendment advocate Mark Baird of Yreka spoke at the Redding Exchange Club on Thursday. There, he described how he won a two-to-one decision at the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals that would allow Californians to openly carry firearms. However, the decision has been stayed until the State decides whether to appeal. Baird said he hopes it happens as it could lead to open carry nationally rather than only in California and Hawaii. |

The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) and its partners have filed an amicus brief with the Supreme Court in support of the respondent in United States v. Hemani, a case challenging the federal lifetime ban on firearm possession for marijuana users.
SAF is joined in the amicus filing by the California Rifle & Pistol Association, Second Amendment Law Center, Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms and Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus.
“The government’s position defies Bruen and Rahimi by seeking to impose a permanent disarmament on law-abiding citizens who use marijuana, even when sober, without any distinctly similar historical tradition to justify such a draconian restriction,” said ... Kostas Moros. |

Wake up America! For years, we have worried about the federal government confiscating our guns, leaving us defenseless. Despite this administration’s claims to protect the 2nd Amendment, we now see how they react to a citizen exercising their right. Find gun, take gun and murder the citizen. This may be the first example, but I don’t think it will be the last, not by a long shot.

The Founders who drafted the Second Amendment had experienced tyranny firsthand. They’d watched British soldiers enter colonial homes without warrants, seize property, and detain people without due process. When they wrote that “a well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed,” they were thinking about exactly this: government agents with unchecked power, acting outside constitutional bounds—a near replica of what we are seeing today. |

A coalition of gun rights advocacy groups is urging the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold a lower court ruling that deemed the federal ban on firearm ownership by people who use marijuana to be unconstitutional.
In an amicus brief filed with the Supreme Court on Thursday, the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF), California Rifle and Pistol Association (CRPA), Second Amendment Law Center (2ALC), Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms and Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus (MGOC) identified a number of legal issues with the underlying federal statute, 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(3). |

Gun rights groups have long been among Donald Trump’s most loyal allies. But following the killing of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, the alliance is showing rare cracks.
In the days since the shooting, the movement has forcefully defended its stance that the second amendment is a means to keep Americans safe from government overreach and abuse and has stood fast in its fight to expand Americans’ right to carry concealed firearms in public and private spaces, even as Trump administration officials, and Trump himself, suggested otherwise. |

Gov. Katie Hobbs said Attorney General Kris Mayes should retract her recent comments on immigration enforcement and Arizona's self-defense law, becoming the most prominent Democrat to criticize Mayes' controversial remarks to date.
Hobbs' criticism of her fellow Democrat stands apart from most officials in her party, who have rallied behind Mayes and argued the attorney general's comments were being misconstrued. Mayes' remarks in a Jan. 20 television interview have set off a firestorm among Republicans and law enforcement groups, leading to a symbolic party-line vote in the Senate on Jan. 29 urging Mayes to resign. |

The Trump administration is facing a “Second Amendment backlash” after Trump and other officials suggested Pretti should not have possessed a gun while monitoring ICE activity, said ABC News. No peaceful protester “shows up with a gun and ammunition rather than a sign,” said Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. That produced pushback from Republican allies. The Constitution “protects Americans’ right to bear arms while protesting,” said Gun Owners of America. Republicans now find themselves in a “tough spot” on gun rights as a result, said Axios, and some GOP officials are pushing back against the president. “Carrying a firearm is not a death sentence,” said Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.). |

As liberals across the state continue to push for gun control measures at the statehouse, Republicans are carrying several bills this session which would secure and enhance Second Amendment rights for Tennesseans.
HB1189/SB1227 was introduced last year and would overhaul the state’s handgun carry permit system by replacing the word “handgun” with “firearm”, allowing permit holders to carry any firearm they own in places where only handguns are currently allowed.
If the bill passes, all valid permits issued prior to the legislation’s passage would be grandfathered into the statute and deemed as the new “concealed firearm carry permits”, and the relevant department would not be required to reissue permits. |

On Monday, January 26th, the Senate Courts of Justice Committee advanced a slate of gun control bills targeting semi-automatic firearms, standard capacity magazines, carry rights, home storage, and more. Most concerning, a substitute to SB 749 was adopted, the bill now bans all magazines above 10 rounds that are currently owned by law abiding Virginians. This will instantly turn individuals into criminals for owning most common handguns, semi-auto rifles and shotguns. Moreover, this hearing went forward while much of Virginia was under a winter storm state of emergency, making it difficult or impossible for many gun owners to safely travel to the Capitol to testify in person. Most of these bills now move to the Senate Finance Committee. |

Arizona has no shortage of GOP representatives who talk a good game about freedom and American values — until the moment those values actually matter. Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ) has once again shown himself to be all bark and no principle, using the tragic events unfolding in Minneapolis as a political cudgel rather than a moment for sober leadership.
Earlier this week, the nation was rocked by the killing of 37-year-old ICU nurse Alex Pretti, who was fatally shot by federal Border Patrol agents during a federally led immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis, Minnesota. |

A Republican lawmaker wants to get rid of certain regulations for carrying a firearm in Wisconsin.
There are 29 states in the U.S. that allow constitutional carry, which means individuals can carry a concealed firearm without a permit.
Wisconsin is not on that list, and State Rep. Chanz Green, R-Grand View, believes the state’s concealed carry laws are too restrictive.
“As a gun owner and a proud advocate for the Second Amendment, I don’t feel that me having to get a permit to conceal and carry is necessary,” Green said. |

On a July day in a suburban Pittsburgh mall food court, Kevin Edler and his wife, Lex, donned their rainbow gear and waited. Families shuffled by. Teens sipped boba. Kevin’s braid trailed from his trucker hat, emblazoned with an AK-47 over a rainbow flag with “Defend Equality” in all capital letters underneath.
The couple posted up at a central table to be seen — not just by other gun-enthusiast queer folk who would meet them there before heading to a nearby gun range social, but also by passersby. Self-defense training alone won’t keep the increasingly targeted queer community safe, they believe. The world also needs to know that they’re ready for the fight. |

President Donald L. Trump was very clear Tuesday when addressing a gaggle of reporters who were asking questions about ongoing problems in Minneapolis, including the shooting death of Alex Pretti, an armed protester.
“You can’t have guns. You can’t walk in with guns,” President Trump said, which caused a reporter to question him about the Second Amendment.
“You can’t walk in with guns,” Trump said in response.
Those two comments caused a stir among the country’s Second Amendment supporters, because the president was very clear in his response, and it wasn’t off-the-cuff. He had plenty of time to consider his answer. |

SB0350 by Sen. Bobby Harshbarger (R-Hawkins County-District 4) states that a landlord shall not prohibit a tenant or tenant’s guest from “lawfully possessing, carrying, transporting, or storing a firearm, any part of a firearm, or firearm ammunition” in a tenant’s dwelling unit or premises.
These protections also extend to a tenant’s vehicle in their designated parking area and to any other location controlled by the landlord as necessary to enter or exit the tenant’s residence or vehicle. Additionally, if a landlord violates the provisions in the bill, an affected tenant will have the right to bring a suit against the landlord for actual damages, punitive damages, and recovery of attorney’s fees. |
