A North Carolina appeals court has said for a second time that a woman convicted of killing her lover should receive a new trial, declaring that text messages and photos from her cellphone wrongly presented to the jury likely prevented her acquittal on self-defense grounds.
...
The texts and photos, which were printed out for jurors, unfairly prejudiced Hicks by emphasizing evidence such as her sex life, rather than whether she was justified in firing at Adams, Court of Appeals Judge April Wood wrote while also vacating her conviction. |

Denial has no survival value. And pretending that the threats faced by Christian churches in today’s world only apply to “other” churches in “other towns” is both imprudent and foolish.
This year, I visited a local church with family for Christmas Eve services. We arrived early, and I had a chance to people watch. I saw one or two individuals who looked like they might be armed judging by their dress and the more serious folding knives clipped to their pants. Nobody had radios and those men were with their respective families, not watching for threats. |

But I think the reality of the dynamic is slightly more complicated:
People believe that Trump is probably a lame duck. But no one is absolutely certain of it.
Believe me, I know this sounds paranoid and slightly crazy. But in 1985, or 1997, or 2005, or 2009, you could have asked any member of the re-elected president’s party, “Can your guy run for a third term?” And they would have been happy to answer—on the record—“Of course not.”
I don’t think that’s where we are right now. |

In a ruling handed down on the last day of 2024, a federal appeals court ruled that the statute banning gun ownership by accused domestic abusers is not unconstitutional under the Second Amendment and can be enforced.
The decision by the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans was a reversal of its earlier decision, and judges took into account the 2024 U.S. Supreme Court ruling in United States v. Rahimi in reaching their latest conclusion. |

A recurring theme of modern culture is the idea that ordinary people cannot “handle” the truth. It is a way to say that ordinary people cannot be trusted to know what the government knows. It is an excuse and justification for the government to keep secrets from the American people. The supposed stupidity and cupidity of most people is a key part of Progressive ideology.
A ubiquitous theme promoted by Progressives is the necessity of controlling “public opinion” and “manufacturing consent”. This is in direct opposition to Christian ideology, as common in colonial America. The founding ideology of the United States of America is natural law supported by Judeo-Christian ethics. |

Both sides are gearing up for the next round in court in the fight over Washington state’s law prohibiting the sale, attempted sale, manufacture and distribution of high-capacity magazines that hold more than 10 rounds.
The case of the State of Washington v. Gator’s Custom Guns Inc. will be heard by the Washington Supreme Court on Jan. 14.
As previously reported by The Center Square, Gator’s Guns in Kelso refused to comply with a ban on the sale of new high-capacity magazines of more than 10 rounds, arguing the ban is unconstitutional.
The high-capacity magazine law went into effect on July 1, 2022. The law does not prohibit the possession of high-capacity magazines.

Typically, areas like schools or polling stations are still prohibited from carrying your weapon. Some states do not even require a permit. Proponents of open carry argue that carrying a gun is their Second Amendment right, and allows them to protect themselves and others if a conflict should arise. However, Giffords Law Center, a left-leaning advocacy group, states that firearms in public places can increase the risk of avoidable, deadly confrontations — a claim substantiated by firearm mortality data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Giffords also claims that open carry can lead to increased rates of suicide. (Gun crime is a big problem in these states across the U.S.) |

Colorado has joined California in taxing Americans’ Second Amendment rights with its new voter-approved gun initiative. While proposals for similar taxes have ignorantly claimed they mean to reduce gun violence, this new Centennial State measure is unique in that it confesses upfront to being a revenue-generating scheme, using victim services as an “ends justify the means” argument. |

It won’t come as any surprise to learn that gun buybacks are a touchy subject in many states across the US. With the Second Amendment playing such a prominent role in our society, the mere notion of giving up guns for money is something that doesn’t sit well with part of the population. However, this isn’t to say that gun buybacks are not successful, as some Gulf States are seeing record numbers of returns. |

Durham police data shows the city had 317 guns stolen from Jan. 1, 2024, through Aug. 3, 2024. It’s an average of more than one gun stolen per day.
Of the total, 222 (70%) of the guns were stolen from cars. Of the guns stolen from cars, 96 (43.24%) of them were stolen by forcibly breaking the glass.
“We’re seeing a lot of people just leave these guns in their vehicles, just carelessly and recklessly leaving them in their vehicles,” said Durham police Cpl. Mactrice Henderson. |
