Armed citizens stopped a mass murderer at the West Freeway Church of Christ. When we plain folk in fly-over country heard that the attacker was stopped quickly, most of us thought, “Praise God.”

Why is the emotional response from politicians and journalists so different from ours?

What did Texas do in 2019 to mitigate gun violence? On Sept. 2, a number of new laws loosening firearm restrictions took effect.

Gov. Greg Abbott stated those were enacted “for the purpose of making our community safer.” How? The gunman in Midland-Odessa was confronted by police. These are the most highly trained professionals in handling firearms. Nonetheless, the gunman shot three and continued with a massacre. Can you imagine untrained citizens?

When Virginia Governor Ralph Northam called for an “assault weapons ban” and asked for approximately $4 million and 18 new paid state positions for new gun-control efforts, he probably understood that there would be pushback in rural areas of the state. But he probably didn’t envision that the state’s largest city — Virginia Beach with approximately 450,000 residents — might have objections.

Arizona could become a Second Amendment sanctuary state if the “2nd Amendment Firearm Freedom Act” — a bill introduced by Rep. Leo Biasiucci of Lake Havasu City — passes.

Biasiucci’s bill, House Bill 2093, would make any federal rulings or laws that violate the Second Amendment “null, void and unenforceable” in Arizona.

The bill would also ban the state, along with cities and counties, from using staff or financial resources to cooperate with laws that violate the Second Amendment.

Kenton County passed a Second Amendment sanctuary resolution Thursday night, something many counties in Kentucky are beginning to do.

Any government teacher would have been proud of the group of citizens that gathered at the Kenton County courthouse in Independence. Everyone talked about the constitution and told the elected officials why they thought the resolution was necessary or not. In the end, enough officials voted to pass the resolution.

Horry County Councilman Johnny Vaught said he received an email from someone saying they wanted Horry County Council members to consider a resolution that would state they were in support of the county becoming a second amendment sanctuary.

“It basically says, okay, federal laws and outside laws really don’t apply here and if you try to pass any laws requiring people to give up their guns, which the second amendment gives them the right to have, then in a sanctuary county or sanctuary city that law would not apply," said Vaught.

The situation in Virginia is heating up. In a combination of gerrymandering mandated by a state court and millions of dollars spent on a few local races by billionaires who hate the idea of an armed population, targeted advertising, organization by sympathizers of the Chinese communists, and apathy by the rest of Virginia voters, the Democrats have taken control of the Governorship and both the General assembly and the Virginia Senate, by rather slim margins.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
[The American Colonies were] all democratic governments, where the power is in the hands of the people and where there is not the least difficulty or jealousy about putting arms into the hands of every man in the country. [European countries should not] be ignorant of the strength and the force of such a form of government and how strenuously and almost wonderfully people living under one have sometimes exerted themselves in defence of their rights and liberties and how fatally it has ended with many a man and many a state who have entered into quarrels, wars and contests with them. — George Mason, "Remarks on Annual Elections for the Fairfax Independent Company" in The Papers of George Mason, 1725-1792, ed Robert A. Rutland (Chapel Hill, 1970).
