    | As someone who loves early morning and late evening walks, as well as solo nights at the movie theater, personal safety is always at the back of my mind. Although experts say awareness and avoidance are the best ways to protect yourself in most emergencies, safety keychains can be an added layer of on-the-go protection.

Safety keychains are personal security tools designed to be easily carried on your keyring. The main benefit of a safety keychain is that you likely have your keys in an easily accessible spot, which makes fending off potential threats easier, says Peter Tay, a double-black belt martial artist and founder of Gotham Jiu Jitsu in New York City.

    | On Saturday morning, a big game hunter shot and killed a male grizzly bear in self-defense, according to a statement from the Idaho Fish and Game.

The bear charged the man from a short distance while the man was hunting in the North Antelope flats area of Island Park on the Caribou-Targhee National Forest.

The hunter was hiking through thick timber when the grizzly came out of the brush, charging directly toward him, wildlife officials said. The man used the hunting rifle he was carrying to shoot the bear, killing it before contact was made.

    | Not that long ago, AKs were cheap, and the 7.62x39mm ammunition they fired made blasting trash in the woods an economically sound pastime. So economical, in fact, that AR-15s chambered for it were once a popular option for those looking to keep range time affordable.

Those days are, unfortunately, well behind us.

Now, AR-15s are far more affordable than the most budget-tier Kalashnikovs, and cheap 5.56 NATO can be found at nearly half the price of 7.62 Soviet.

Does the new, higher cost of 7.62×39 mean you should stop shooting your ComBloc guns? Of course not, you just have to be smarter about what you feed them.

    | I recently read an email from Moms Demand Action that led with a chilling statistic: more than 70 women are shot and killed by an intimate partner every month in the United States.

As someone who has spent the last several years teaching other women how to properly and safely use firearms, that number is heartbreaking. Every one of those stories is tragic. But what troubles me is how that statistic is being used to convince women that their safety depends on being disarmed, which is the opposite of empowerment.

    | Nellis and Jake were the instructors. None of Everytown’s trainers provide their last names, which is very telling. Most real instructors provide all of their training and experience in addition to their full names.

Nellis, according to her bio, is “a mother and advocate, she is committed to building safer environments and believes that all children deserve a future free from gun violence.”

Jake’s bio is about as bad: “As an instructor, Jake strives to create welcoming spaces where everyone can learn to feel safer and more confident with firearms.”

Neither of the instructors ever mentioned what their kids actually deserve or how they create “welcoming spaces.”

    | Raoul joined a coalition of 17 attorneys general calling on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to reverse a decision striking down two provisions in Hawaii's firearm permitting scheme. The court filed an amicus brief in the case of Yukutake v. Lopez.

A lower court decision ruled that Hawaii's requirements for a 30-day time limit on purchase permits, as well as limited inspection on guns imported out of state, sold by an unlicensed individual or are homemade "ghost guns," violated the Second Amendment.

    | Siding with a 19-year-old man who was spotted with a gun in his waistband, a Broward County circuit judge Friday ruled that a state law barring people under age 21 from carrying concealed weapons violates Second Amendment rights.

Judge Frank Ledee issued a nine-page ruling that said Florida's "prohibition on the concealed carry of firearms by eighteen-to-twenty year olds strips a class of legal adults of their ability to exercise the very right the Constitution guarantees."

    | The section of the Florida law prohibiting adults under age 21 from carrying a concealed firearm is unconstitutional, a Broward judge ruled Friday.

Effectively dismissing a case against a Fort Lauderdale resident who turns 20 in December, Broward Circuit Judge Frank Ledee said the restriction is inconsistent with the Second Amendment of the Constitution, which guarantees the right of the people to keep and bear arms, and with other Florida laws permitting both concealed and open carry of weapons. Ledee agreed with the defense argument that 18-year-olds are treated as adults in multiple legal settings, including the ability to vote, marry and serve in the armed forces.

    | After the U.S. Supreme Court this week said it will hear a case focused on the same federal law, a judge Thursday put on hold a long-running lawsuit about whether Florida medical-marijuana patients can be barred from having guns.

Chief U.S. District Judge Allen Winsor issued a stay of the Florida lawsuit until after the Supreme Court decides whether a law prohibiting drug users having guns violates the Second Amendment. The Supreme Court on Monday announced it will take up a Texas case, known as United States v. Hemani, that focuses on the law

    | A Pickaway County jury acquitted a man of murder and other charges in an August 2024 shooting in Circleville.

Jaison McLean, 42, of Stoutsville, was accused of fatally shooting 55-year-old David Raines Jr. on Aug. 13, 2024, during an altercation between the two men on the 700 block of South Pickaway Street.

A jury found him not guilty Oct. 23 of two counts of murder and one count of felonious assault, court records say. McLean argued at his trial, which began on Oct. 20, that he shot Raines in self-defense.

    | What becomes part of state constitutions cannot contradict what is in the U.S. Constitution, Jacobs pointed out. For instance, a state could not put in its constitution that it wants to confiscate all guns because that would violate the U.S. Constitution’s Second Amendment right to bear arms. But if a right is not spelled out in the U.S. Constitution, it can be added to a state constitution.

State constitutions “supplement rights that were available under the U.S. Constitution,” according to Ken Gormley, the president of Duquesne University and professor of law who has written a book on the Pennsylvania Constitution.

    | “How in the world did you miss that rabbit?” I glanced over at Dave, about 40 yards away in a brier thicket.

He was amazed (I was too) that I had missed a shot, with a shotgun, that was seemingly a gimme on a cottontail rabbit. I probably mumbled something like “I don’t have a clue” and then wandered away in the brush and brier choked clearing we were in. Tim, our other hunting partner, said nothing but his stoic stare said it all.

    | Georgia's Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Kemp has unveiled a $90 million proposal for school security focused on mental health and local control. But absent from his plan was any mention of the topic that has dominated the national conversation around school safety: guns.

"This is a school safety proposal. This has nothing to do with Second Amendment protections or gun control ideas that my opponent might have," Kemp said, referring to Democrat Stacey Abrams.

    | Federal Procurement Data System records show that ICE has spent over $71.5 million from January 20 through October 18 on "small arms, ordnance, and ordnance accessories manufacturing"—a 636 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024, according to an analysis by Popular Information. One bulk purchase alone on September 29 for over $9 million worth of semi-automatic and automatic rifles nearly matched ICE's entire small arms spending from January to October 2024. This single purchase also topped ICE's average annual small arms spending ($8.4 million) during Trump's first term.

                      | The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to permit the conquered Eastern peoples to have arms. History teaches that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by doing so. Indeed I would go so far as to say that the underdog is a sine qua non for the overthrow of any sovereignty. So let's not have any native militia or police. German troops alone will bear the sole responsibility for the maintenance of law and order. — Adolf Hitler, April 11, 1942.
