In his in final argument Thursday in the trial of Shyhiem "Trey" Adams in the stabbing death of Enfield High School student Justin Brady, prosecutor John F. Fahey gave the jury a rundown on some of the many complexities of Connecticut's self-defense law.

But his final words on the subject were simple.

"You can't bring a knife to a fistfight," the prosecutor told the six-member jury in Hartford Superior Court.

Ed.: You *can* bring a knife to a fistfight--the jury acquitted Adams.

But retired Wolfgang said the case likely rested on the justified homicide defense.

"In my experience with what the law says, I'm assuming that the jury believed the justification defense since the only issue was self defense or whether he was justified," Wolfgang said.

Wolfgang said to prove justified homicide, or self-defense, there had to be proof Casado feared for his life.

"There had to be evidence showing that he, and I assume there was, that she had threatened him. That he feared for his life. That this was a reaction that was quote unquote justified by the circumstances," Wolfgang said.

State Senator Mary Felzkowski (R-Tomahawk) on Wednesday, Oct. 6 announced that she had authored two pieces of legislation included in the “Sporting Freedom” bill package, 13 bills written by Republican lawmakers that she said aim to “promote hunting and fishing in the state, protect the rights of sportsmen and women, as well as ensure that our natural resources are responsibly maintained.”

One bill authored by Felzkowski would allow Wisconsin residents to carry a concealed firearm without a license. In a release, Felzkowski said allowing “law-abiding citizens” to do so “(reflects) the constitutional right to carry a weapon in self-defense.”

It’s wise to remember that you can’t believe everything you hear during a presidential campaign. However, when opposing candidates tell voters the next president’s appointees to the Supreme Court could shape the law for a generation, that can turn out to be true.

Over the course of the Supreme Court term that began this week, the justices will hear cases that could have a significant impact on the right to bear arms and on the power of states to restrict access to legal abortion, as well as many other important and controversial issues.

There were some freedoms that respondents mistakenly thought are in the First Amendment: 18% said it protects the right to “bear arms,” which is the Second Amendment. Others said the “right to vote” (17%). Voting is considered the ultimate expression of the right of petition, but it’s not explicitly mentioned in the amendment. Some named the right to due process (15%), which is established by the Fifth and 14th Amendments.

On the issue of gun regulation, for instance, the Left caricatures all defenders of the Second Amendment as insecure obsessives drawn to violence and insurrection. Meanwhile, the Right dismisses those who back even moderate reform as determined "gun grabbers" seeking to erase our constitutional right to bear arms.

Ed.: They *are*, in true fact, trying to "erase our constitutional right to bear arms".

On Tuesday, Black argued that video shows that Rosenbaum chased Rittenhouse and tried to grab his gun away, WQAD reports. He also testified that video shows that Huber attacked Rittenhouse with a skateboard before also trying to grab away his gun. He claimed the footage shows that Grosskreutz also attacked Rittenhouse by running at him with a gun in his hand.

“A citizen in that position, given those indicators, would it be reasonable for them to believe they were about to be assaulted?” Black said. “I would argue yes."

State Representative Anthony Sabatini is pushing for constitutional carry legislation.

Sabatini is looking to pass a House Bill 103 that would not require residents to have a license to carry a concealed weapon.

“Floridians should be able to exercise their Second Amendment right without a permission slip from the government. Bearing arms is a fundamental constitutional right. If somebody wants to defend themselves the only permission slip needed is the U.S. Constitution,” Sabatini said in a written statement.

Over the years, I’ve known a few cops and assorted gunowners. I’ve fired all kinds of rifles and handguns, including a .44 Magnum rifle, and a .44 Magnum revolver—“the most powerful handgun in the world....” (Harry Callahan in the movie Dirty Harry).

I’m not opposed to guns, per se. My main question for gunowners is “why?” Why do you choose to own a gun?

Of course, I’m not opposed to owning a gun for hunting, (although I disapprove of certain types of hunting).

As it has done consistently for several years, the FBI Uniform Crime Report for 2020 once again undercuts the campaign by gun prohibitionists to ban so-called “assault rifles.”

FBI data showing rifles of any kind are the “weapon of choice” in a fraction of homicides simply do not support the anti-gun effort.

In any given year, rifles—including semiautomatic modern sporting rifles demonized as “weapons of war” by the gun control crowd—are involved in 2 to 4 percent of all murders. Last year, according to the FBI data, rifles were used for sure in only 454 of the 13,620 gun-related murders listed in the annual crime report.

California is adding a secretive but growing class of weapons to those that can legally be seized under gun violence restraining orders, under a bill Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law Friday.

What also is known as a “red flag” law allows police along with family members, colleagues, employers and teachers to ask judges to take firearms from those they fear are a possible threat to themselves or others.

Gun control advocates said the state of Oregon should limit how many guns people can buy within a certain timeframe.

Groups supporting gun rights, however, argue limits would do nothing to change a surge in gun violence, specifically in Portland.

A recently announced federal case involving two brothers accused of buying 82 guns in 18 months, 12 of which were recovered by law enforcement in traffic stops and other searches, spurred KATU to look into state and federal laws and regulations around gun-buying.

Mexico has also been pressing for the U.S. government to do more to stop illegal guns from pouring in from the U.S. The guns fuel Mexico's organized crime violence, creating a public safety issue that López Obrador's government has been unable to adequately address.

Pistol Versus Pistol-Caliber Carbine

The PCC (Pistol Caliber Carbine) is all the rage today. Its relatively mild sound signature is less damaging to the ears than pistol, rifle, or shotgun if fired indoors in an emergency. It’s light, very soft in recoil and looks intimidating to a malefactor at gunpoint. The longer barrel increases velocity with most loads: A 9mm carbine can achieve hot .38 Super pistol ballistics, a .40 S&W carbine can hit like a full power 10mm pistol and a .45 ACP carbine can equal a .45 Super pistol. The PCC also promises better hit potential: It has a longer sight radius with iron sights, is more likely than a pistol to be used with an optical sight and has that critical locking point on the shoulder.

Mayor Jackson, who will finish his fourth and final term as mayor at the end of the year, addressed the city’s rise in gun violence. Over the course of the decade from 2010-2020, the city’s homicide rate more than doubled despite a shrinking population.

In 2010, there were 75 homicides. In 2020, there were 177.

Jackson has expressed his frustration of not being able to pass more stringent gun laws at the local level. Although outspoken during his tenure as mayor on gun laws, he said he does not have any plans on being such a vocal advocate once leaving office.

Demand for heavyweight pistols is rising, and in competition at least, guns are weighed in pounds rather than ounces. The fact is, heavyweight equals less recoil impulse, but at what point does more weight become a liability rather than an asset? The argument that a heavier gun is slower to move between targets is valid, but in the grand scheme of things it’s minutiae. A heavy gun is easier to shoot fast but is cumbersome to carry. A lighter gun is easier to swing around and isn’t a burden to the waistband. The adult in us likes both sides.
