... "Overall, the arguments here are well-supported by precedent. To counter them, it must be understood that while the militia is intended to be a tool of a properly-functioning government, the 2nd Amendment does not merely secure the right of a State to arm its militia: it secures the right of the people to arm themselves. This does not preserve the militia itself, but it preserves the ability of the States to quickly form a new militia at need from the body of the people." ... |

"Through the many wars this nation has engaged in, certain military firearms have carved a niche in history that just won’t go away. For instance, the 30-40 Krag from World War I days still has a large following. The Lewis machine gun still lingers on to some extent, Stepping back farther into history brings the Spencer rifle of the Civil War era- These are just two of the dozens of firearms that won a place in the hearts of collectors, hunters and just plain shooters. Probably one of the most famous is the Model 1911 Automatic Pistol. Many of us World War II veterans can relate to the 45 pistol."

"Over much of the last year, Wilmette village officials did what they could to mobilize support against a bill in Springfield they feared would effectively overturn a local handgun ban."

"Morton Grove Police will continue to enforce the village's historic handgun ban despite a bill approved this week over a governor's veto aimed at curtailing local gun laws."
"Senate Bill 2165, which bars local prosecutions in self-defense cases, was drafted last year in response to an incident involving Wilmette resident Hale DeMar, who shot and wounded a burglar in his home. DeMar was cleared of any wrongdoing in the shooting, but faces a fine and loss of two handguns under a local law banning handgun possession."

"State Rep. Bob Flider (D-Mount Zion) and members of the Illinois House on Nov. 16 helped preserve Central Illinois gun owners’ rights by successfully overriding the governor’s veto of a bill that would allow residents to have their day in court if they violate local gun bans while protecting their families and property from intruders."
"Senate Bill 2165 provides that someone who uses a firearm against an intruder has an affirmative defense from being charged or fined for violating a local gun ordinance prohibiting firearms. The bill was introduced last year after a Wilmette man was charged with violating a local gun ban after shooting a burglar in his own home. The burglar had tried to rob the house twice in a 24-hour period." |

"In the end, it wasn’t Alzheimer’s disease that took the life of retired Baltimore County Circuit Judge Robert I.H. Hammerman. It was his obsession with dying from it." ...
"For 16 months, the fastidious judge, afraid he was losing his memory, mapped out every detail of his death down to the memorial service and the allotment of his possessions. Although he had never fired a gun before, upon deciding a bullet would be his agent of death, Hammerman bought a pistol, obtained a permit, and took two safety classes at a police range. He then determined the date, the locale and 'that I would write this letter the night before.'" ... -------

... "The SKS semi-automatic rifle used was not an assault rifle and is not an assault rifle. It wasn't banned in the Clinton ban of 1993 and isn't banned by Connecticut's law either. The reason is that it doesn't have any of the distinguishing features, such as a high-capacity magazine, pistol grip or flash suppressor. The SKS is semi-automatic, as are many hunting rifles, such as the Remington 7600, but it has a fixed, not removable, 10-round internal magazine, has a standard non-pistol grip stock and doesn't have a flash suppressor. But I'm sure the liberal media won't tell the public that. They will just report what they want." ... |

It is apparently too underpowered to kill a deer with a single shot, the goal of hunters who want to avoid needless suffering." ...
