Original title: "Environment Officials See a Chance to Shape Regulations"

... "While environmental groups have enjoyed little access or influence during Bush's first four years in office, hunting, fishing and gun owner organizations fared better."

"Gun owners voted by a 2 to 1 ratio to reelect Bush, but only after the president addressed their concerns that his policies were endangering wetlands and streams and turning prime big game habitat into massive drilling fields. ..."

"[Chairman of the White House Council on Environmental Quality James] Connaughton said those groups have 'played a very strong role' in establishing policies on wetlands and oil and gas development in areas that are home to wildlife. He predicted they would be 'strong and lasting partners' whose influence will not dim now that their votes have been cast." ...

"'I do love my country and it hurts me very deeply to see what's happening here, to see us so far off course,' she said. 'But I've met a lot of evangelicals and they believe it deeply. They'd rather vote for fetuses and against gay people, rather than voting against war, with thousands dead, against guns, which we know kill people. When you're talking about deeply held religious beliefs, you're out of luck.'" [emphasis added] ...

"Who says the Adirondacks can't be a vital manufacturing center?"

"It just needs the right product, and in this day and age of computer-driven technology there are more possibilities than ever."

"Here indeed is the right product."

"Avid hunter, entrepreneur and loyal North Country inventor Terry Gordon, holder of U.S. patent 6,363,223 and creator of Adirondack Optics in Keeseville, has invented what he calls the SmartScope. It is the first and only rifle scope incorporating digital imagery. With Gordon's invention, you can photograph through the lens of the scope and capture the moment you are pulling the trigger, which, if you are inclined to keep score, is .007 of a second before the recoil begins." ...

"BANNING boys from playing with toy guns is futile and may even damage their development, a leading child psychologist has warned."

"Confirming what many guilty parents long suspected, Penny Holland says boys will indulge in gunplay regardless of attempts by schools, nurseries and guardians to stop them." ...

"[Holland's] book suggests that nurseries that had relaxed their ban on guns, swords and violent games reported that boys had more fun together, made closer friendships, and became more creative in other areas of play, such as dressing up as princes in fairy tales. Most such nurseries found that the amount of real fighting between boys declined." ...

Everyone in the chamber stood."

"Antique gun collectors take notice: on Nov. 15, 16, and 17 in San Francisco, premier firearms auctioneer Greg Martin is holding a series of four sales loaded with top material. The 1,451 lots are estimated to bring in a total of more than $4.5 million."

"There is an almost overwhelming amount of material to choose from, including many pieces that stand as markers in the evolution of some of America's top gun makers. Like a group of five rifles and guns made in the mid-19th century by Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. These firearms shot a kind of caseless ammunition that was the equivalent of a miniature rocket ball. The rarest of this group is a pair of ivory-gripped pistols previously owned by King Farouk of Egypt, which come in their original varnished walnut case." ...

OCEAN'S ELEVEN star BERNIE MAC's favourite hobby is collecting guns - because he likes the machinery.

The funnyman keeps many makes and models of firearms at home, but claims he gets the biggest thrill from seeing how the gun is put together, rather than shooting it.

He tells PLAYBOY magazine, "I have Glocks, .45s, Berettas, over-unders, Remingtons.

"I like the marksmanship and the discipline that it takes to be a gun owner. I like the machinery, breaking it down. Being able to take it out, clean it and put the spring back in is even more fascinating than having the gun."

A federal lawsuit filed against Windham-based Bushmaster Firearms Inc. will now be heard in Maine.

The lawsuit, filed by Colt Defense of West Hartford, Conn., alleges Bushmaster Firearms Inc. copied Colt's M-4 carbine rifle. The M-4 is standard issue for all branches of the U.S. military.

Colt also is suing Heckler & Koch GmbH, a German company with a plant in Sterling, Va. The firearm manufacturer claims both companies have engaged in trademark infringement, trademark dilution, false advertising, unfair competition and deceptive trade practices.

The lawsuit was filed last April in federal court in Alexandria, Va.

"American marines called in two airstrikes on the pair of dingy three-story buildings squatting along Highway 10 on Wednesday, dropping 500-pound bombs each time. They fired 35 or so 155-millimeter artillery shells, 10 shots from the muzzles of Abrams tanks and perhaps 30,000 rounds from their automatic rifles. The building was a smoking ruin."

"But the sniper kept shooting."

"He - or they, because no one can count the flitting shadows in this place - kept 150 marines pinned down for the better part of a day. It was a lesson on the nature of the enemy in this hellish warren of rubble-strewn streets. Not all of the insurgents are holy warriors looking for martyrdom. At least a few are highly trained killers who do their job with cold precision and know how to survive." ...

"On Wednesday, the Senate delivered a bipartisan 40-18 vote to override the governor's veto of SB 2161, which would protect citizens from local anti-gun ordinances if they use a firearm to defend themselves or their families. "It is no longer easy, and sometimes incorrect, to speak of a traditional nine-day gun-deer hunting season in Wisconsin. Earn-A-Buck, Zone T, Herd Reduction Zone, Metro Zone and Disease Eradication Zone are a few of the modern-day season structures..."

"Gun-deer hunting was not always an easy outdoors activity, even when the entire state had a nine-day season. Weather, lack of off-road vehicles and primitive cabins made deer hunting a real challenge back in those days. Safety also was much more of a concern before blaze orange clothing. Deer were not as abundant either. For example, 70,284 deer tags were sold in 1930 and an estimated 23,000 deer were killed." ...

"The federal assault weapons ban expiration on Sept. 13 was a day many gun enthusiasts had been looking forward to for some time."

"Arbitrarily prohibiting certain capacities of clips, use of a pistol grip, a folding stock for storage and transportation and other aspects of the weapon that did not affect lethality, the law has proven to be ineffective in prohibiting guns that are truly dangerous. ... A misconception many people have is that the assault weapons ban prohibited the purchase of fully-automatic weapons. These were effectively banned in 1934 under the National Firearms Act by the imposition of a large tax and extremely tight regulation."

"Eric Meyer's recent letter (Nov. 3) pointing out that Bill Arevalo's carrying of a concealed handgun on campus (Oct. 27) is against Purdue rules leaves me wondering what he was talking about when he ended, "So you are correct, (sic) it is people such as yourself who use guns incorrectly and illegally who are the problem." Has Mr. Arevalo ever been a "problem" on campus because of his concealed handgun? Maybe, but I doubt it. If Mr. Meyer would have been more specific, he might not have sounded so silly."

"If someone with ill intent chooses to break the rule and carry a concealed handgun on the Purdue campus, who is to stop him? "The 55 citizens who marched in Modesto on Saturday against gang violence should be commended. Although prevention of gang involvement starts at home, I couldn't help but think that this march wasn't about gangs; it was about guns. If gang members didn't have easy access to handguns and assault weapons, drive-by shootings could never happen and innocents would not be killed by stray bullets."
