There are no seasonal natural disasters—no hurricanes, tornados, blizzards or wildfires—such as there are in various areas of the United States. But an idea that the government should be given so much power that it could take away every right of the individual citizen—even their right to self-defense—did lead to the country’s ruination.

As a former citizen of Venezuela who became a U.S. citizen, I am now hearing many of the same things I heard in Venezuela from certain anti-Second Amendment politicians. I was an Olympic shooting competitor representing Venezuela and am now a lawful gun owner here in America. I don’t want to see this right being threatened again.

The Supreme Court said in June that Americans have a right to carry firearms in public for self-defense, striking down a New York gun law. The decision came out as Congress and states debated gun-control legislation. So in reaction to that, the New Jersey Assembly passed legislation that makes it even tougher for legal gun owners to carry a firearm.

According to Michael Symons' article on nj1015.com, "The bill requires more comprehensive background checks, requires people to go through training and buy liability insurance, raises costs for permits, and prohibits permit holders from carrying guns in many areas deemed sensitive". Among them are places of worship, where some have come under attack.

The Leavenworth County Attorney declined to file charges against a man who fatally shot an intruder allegedly trying to force his way into the resident’s home, according to a letter released Wednesday. “There is no way to show that the resident’s intent was anything more than trying to deter someone, who had just gone through his vehicle, from attempting to violently enter his home in the middle of the night and that he felt that his life was at risk,” Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson wrote in the letter. “Due to all of this, we do not believe we legally and ethically can file charges.”

What more needs to happen? Are we at a point in society where this is normal?

Politicians can work together to fix this epidemic of mass shootings. Banning automatic assault rifles should be first on the list. Again, AR-15s are weapons of mass destruction that are used by the military while at war, and this specific weapon is meant to cause life-changing damage to any human being.

Some politicians say that easy accessibility to guns can prevent mass shootings.

Yesterday a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction against enforcement of that provision, which had already been blocked by another judge. Both judges said New York had failed to show that the private property rule was "consistent with this Nation's historical tradition of firearm regulation." That is the constitutional test prescribed by the Supreme Court's June 23 ruling in New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen, which upheld the right to carry guns in public for self-defense and overturned New York's requirement that residents show "proper cause" to exercise that right.

Another week in the United States means another mass shooting, this time at the hands of an alleged anti-gay, anti-trans 21-year-old NPR says “evaded” Colorado’s red flag gun laws after reportedly threatening his mother with a bomb. His alleged crimes in Club Q in Colorado Springs were so clearly motivated by bigotry that state officials threw the book at him nearly immediately with murder and hate crimes charges.

While votes were still being counted after Election Day this month — and well beyond — the fact that gun control initiative Measure 114 was projected to narrowly pass proved enough for some of Oregon's arcane administrative mechanics to begin churning.

According to the Secretary of State's office, laws passed via initiative petition like this one go into effect precisely one month after the election: midnight on Thursday, Dec. 8. Even the authors of Measure 114 said that they thought it would become effective a month after the vote was certified.

Tuesday's ruling by U.S. District Judge John Sinatra in Buffalo struck down a provision in the law that made it a felony for a licensed gun owner to possess a firearm on any private property unless the property owner allowed it with a sign or by giving express consent.

Whether the teen squeegee worker should be tried in adult or juvenile court and whether he acted in self-defense or not are both legitimate issues worthy of discussion (”The case of the teen squeegee worker accused of fatally shooting Timothy Reynolds will remain in adult court, a judge rules,” Nov. 18).

However, why is no one — not the attorneys, not the media and not the concerned public — raising what should be one of the most important questions: Why did a 14-year-old kid have a gun in his backpack? Why isn’t that scandalous and incomprehensible fact being addressed by anyone?

When a local business owner reached out to inquire about a possible firearms training, Captain Goodie took the opportunity to educate the group on more than just guns. By combining several different classes, to include firearms training, self defense, situational awareness and others, a revised, three-part-series of tactics designed to focus on the individual as a form of target hardening, was born.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
...but if circumstances should at any time oblige the government to form an army of any magnitude, that army can never be formidable to the liberties of the people, while there is a large body of citizens, little if at all inferior to them in discipline and use of arms, who stand ready to defend their rights... — Alexander Hamilton speaking of standing armies in Federalist No. 29.
