Young hunters ages 6-15 harvested 15,591 deer during Missouris early youth portion of the deer hunting season this past weekend, according to preliminary data from the Missouri Department of Conservation. Top harvesting counties were Franklin with 336 deer killed, followed by Howell with 324 and Osage with 320. In Central Missouri, youth hunters killed 110 deer in Cole County, 166 in Boone County, 178 in Maries County, 213 in Miller County, 131 in Moniteau County and 199 in Morgan County.

Bensalem High School holds a distinction that sets it apart as the only one in the Philadelphia region to host a Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps.

Retired Col. John C. Church Jr., who graduated from the United States Naval Academy and served with the Marines, now directs the 100-member cadet corps at Bensalem, as well as its eight-member shooting team.

Members of the shooting squad are aiming high both on and off the target range.

Seniors on the team are applying to prestigious colleges and universities if they havent already made plans to join the military when they graduate.

Today, Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC), Second Amendment Foundation (SAF), and New Jersey Second Amendment Society (NJ2AS) announced the filing of a new federal lawsuit challenging the State of New Jerseys laws that prevent individuals from carrying a loaded handgun outside of the home for self-defense. This new lawsuit challenges New Jerseys criminal statutory scheme as it relates to carrying loaded, operable handguns outside of the home without a permit as well as the States regulatory scheme as it relates to applications for and issuance of carry permits. Rogue elements of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are continuing their assault on certain types of commonly-owned semi-automatic pistols. According to the law firm Wiley, ATF has developed a new interpretation of handgun that threatens to curtail the supply of foreign-manufactured pistols and could put many law-abiding gun owners in legal jeopardy.

The Service Cougars had a strong week of shooting in Cook Inlet Conference riflery competition, defeating West 7-0 one night and South 7-0 on another.

In the virtual-meet win over West, Matteo Yoon fired a match-high 291 and five other Cougars scored 281 or better.

West was led by Camille Bennetts 282 and Mackenzie Hawkins' perfect score of 100 in the prone position.

In the win over South, Josie Bart posted a match-high 290 and all three other members of Services A team shot 284 or better.

Kylee Wagendorfs 289 led South, a score equaled by Services Gabriela Zych.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation is reporting that so far, 2020 is a record-breaking year for gun sales, and that is based on NSSF-adjusted background check data from the FBIs National Instant Check System (NICS), which just posted a raw number of more than 3.3 million such checks initiated over the past month.

According to the NICS data, October saw 3,305,465 background checks initiated, covering not only gun sales but other purposes requiring a background check.

Living in rural Arizona, I expect to see a snake every time I step outside. While I almost never see one, I expect one to be there. As I move about in this environment, I expect to see scorpions, coyotes, mountain lions, bobcats, loose dogs and bad people, among others. Just the other night, I saw a mountain lion at my gate while I was outside looking for my dog. I looked at the lion, it looked at me, it strolled by and quickly disappeared. This months cover feature is on the 2020 U.S. Helice National Championships. For those unfamiliar with the game, helice is a clay sport that has been popular in Europe since the 1960s and is gaining ground stateside. Instead of using a traditional clay bird, the target for helice (often called a ZZ bird) has a round, plastic witness cap attached to a propeller. The wings provide for erratic flight and a difficult shooting game. When struck by pellets, the witness cap separates from the propeller, which signals a successful hit. A total of 48 handguns were stolen from a Kalamazoo County sporting goods store last week. At approximately 2 a.m. on Oct. 26, at least nine individuals broke the front glass of the D&R Sports Center, located at 8178 W. Main St. in Oshtemo Township, entered the business and stolen four dozen firearms, according to a news release issued by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Hollow point bullets come in an amazing array of styles, and among them is the boat tail. The hollow point boat tail bullet (HP-BT) also known as the boat tail hollow point or BTHP ammo is primarily a rifle ammunition used for hunting big game at long range, and is sometimes used as a coyote and wolf ammo. Like other hollow points, the bullet expands rapidly upon impact, creating a large wound channel and typically stopping most creatures in their tracks with that single shot.

I was fortunate enough to tour the CZ factory in the Czech Republic some years ago after this beautiful country was freed from the yoke of Communism. During my drive to the massive factory complex we passed block after block of depressing grey concrete apartment housing units. In the grey morning light, they looked more like prisons, courtesy of their former Russian rulers. It was sobering, and frankly, I wasnt sure what to expect at CZ.

Its been said if you give a soldier or cop an anvil for Christmas, hell break it by Valentines Day. Their equipment necessarily has to be reliable and capable of withstanding the rigors of hard use, day-in and day-out. My shotgun of choice for the last several years meets the above criteria. Whats the most important piece of deer hunting advice youve ever received? Im guessing it didnt have anything to do with pre-rut tactics, analyzing moon phases, or developing cellular trail camera strategies. It was probably a lot simpler. Maybe something like: Stop wiggling so damn much and listen for deer. The thing is, these little lessons are actually pretty hard to learn. Thats because you have to live them firsthand and even blow a few hunts before they start to sink in. Compile enough of these experiences in the deer woods and, over time, something like wisdom starts to develop. New hunting tactics can be effective, the latest gear and the hottest new guns are fun to obsess over, but its wisdom that kills deer.
