Heavin was helping the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association fund this training, but the dominant presence that day was the group’s founder and director, Richard Mack. With his Reaganesque swoosh of dark hair and the cadence of a country preacher, he delivered his organization’s central message: that sheriffs, within their counties, are more powerful than any state or federal authority, and that they can resist “tyranny” by refusing to enforce laws they believe violate the U.S. Constitution. “This is a peaceful and effective process, à la Martin Luther King, à la Gandhi, à la Rosa Parks,” he said.

As a result, gun laws across the country are under attack, including here in Connecticut. The CT Citizens Defense League, the state affiliate of the NRA represented by two Republican state legislators, filed suit in federal court to overturn our assault weapons ban, the second such group to do so. Just recently, a federal judge ruled unconstitutional a federal law that prohibits possession of guns without serial numbers. Serial numbers are a key factor in solving crimes involving guns.

Connecticut is fortunate to have one of the lowest gun death rates in the nation, thanks to tough gun laws that are ranked third strongest by the Giffords Law Center, secured over the past 30 years by Democratic majorities in the General Assembly.

Election Day is around the corner, and one of the most fundamental rights we have as American citizens is the right to vote. With so much at stake this year, I encourage you to ask yourself the following:

Who will push back against the Democrats’ reckless tax and spend agenda that has left Montana families choosing between gas or groceries? Who will defend our Montana way of life and protect our Second Amendment rights? Who will work to secure the southern border? And lastly, who will work to keep Montana, Montana? With these questions in mind, your choices are clear this election.

From there, Haynes has expanded her platform. She is pro-life and pro-Second Amendment, and has decried “government overreach” in the early days of the COVID pandemic. She also disagrees with the police accountability legislation that Bynum helped shepherd through the Legislature. And Haynes said she would like to repeal or modify a 2019 measure that aimed to create more affordable housing by allowing for duplexes, triplexes and quadplexes in cities such as Happy Valley. Haynes thinks that will strain infrastructure.

Bryan Iverson, a senior adviser for state House and Senate Republicans, said Haynes doesn’t have “that classical resume,” but she represents a change in course that people want.

In an interview with Portland State Vanguard, a gun shop owner who has requested that both his shop and name be anonymous presented his view on Measure 114. He said that he is “extremely sympathetic to gun control,” and described himself as a “surprisingly moderate position from such an unexpected source.”

Despite the role that Measure 114 will play in regulating his livelihood, he said that he was in favor of the proposed legislative change. “I understand that I’m supposed to be pro-gun ownership and I do consider myself to be a supporter of gun rights overall, but I think it is unreasonable to be so adamantly against gun control that it makes us look unreasonable by comparison,” he said.

It is the largest lead any poll has found for Abbott and bumps his lead in the Real Clear Politics average up to 9.2 percent, among the largest since February.

Daubenberger argued that this was a clear case of self-defense, noting Frisby did not carry the firearm, but was handed the gun and only used it after first being fired upon by someone else.

Clay argued that self-defense is not an available defense at the district court level, however, and that Frisby is not licensed or able to possess a firearm due to his criminal history.

While Lacey agreed that self-defense may in fact be applicable here, he also agreed with Clay that it was not available to Frisby and held him on all charges. Formal arraignment is scheduled for Nov. 30 at the Delaware County Courthouse in Media.

The former mayor has also criticized the governor for his stances on guns. After previously pledging to heed calls to "do something" after the Dayton mass shooting, he later abandoned a push for more restrictions on firearms before eventually signing bills allowing Ohioans to carry concealed weapons without a separate permit as well as to "Stand Your Ground" instead of retreating before shooting to kill in perceived self defense.

"Never in my my worst nightmare did I think that the thing he was going to do would actually make it worse," Whaley said in a March primary debate.

A collection of Delaware gun rights activists are asking Delaware Chancery Court Wednesday to toss out legislation passed this spring that prohibits most people under the age of 21 from purchasing or owning a firearm.

The legislation is one in a package of bills passed by Democrats in the final months of the legislative session. The others ban the purchase and possession of AR-15s and other assault-style weapons, limit magazine sizes and expand the scope of background checks.

He has earned an A+ rating from the National Rifle Association, not supporting “gun-grabbing red flag laws.”

Busch Valentine has said she respects the second amendment, and “believes that law-abiding Americans have the right to own guns for hunting, sport and self-defense.” However, she has said military-style weapons don’t belong on our streets or in our communities.

Her website says she will support safety reforms like background checks and red flag laws.

New Jersey is considering a bill that would nullify the recent Supreme Court opinion upholding the right of the individual to keep and bear arms.

In June 2022, in the case of New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, the Supreme Court of the United States upheld the right of “law-abiding citizens with ordinary self-defense needs [to exercise] their Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms in public for self-defense.”

Currently, we have a substantial national military force to meet any outside threat. State forces, the National Guard, are mostly used to deal with the state and local emergencies. We have state and local police to deal with criminal and civil misbehavior. Yet we tolerate the sale and distribution of military-type weapons capable of literally firing an infinite number of rounds of bullets.

Why have we been unable to stem gun violence in this country? The court majority, presumably pro life, uses the Second Amendment to invalidate any serious proposal to regulate the sale and distribution of military-style weapons.

Reeves said historians even disagree on whether the Second Amendment confers an individual right to bear arms, as the Supreme Court ruled in 2008, or whether it confers a more limited, collective rights to bear arms. And historians have been “unsparing in their criticism” of Bruen, he said.

Reeves is a federal judge for the Southern District of Mississippi who was appointed by former President Barack Obama. The case before him is a challenge to the federal ban on felons possessing firearms. Lawyers for Jessie Bullock contend that the law must be struck down because founding-era legislatures didn’t prohibit people such as him from owning guns simply because of their status as felons.

This proposed amendment will add Second Amendment rights to the state constitution while subjecting any regulation of gun rights to what is known as “strict scrutiny,” in the eyes of the court.

According to University of Iowa Law professor Todd Petty, this level of review is the highest when it comes to the law. It requires the government to show a compelling interest in implementing a regulation.

“Among lawyers, it’s a very familiar phrase, but probably very unfamiliar among non-lawyers,” Pettys said.

Early voting locations across the country have been the scene of armed poll watchers, prompting concerns about voter intimidation. Here's what voters need to know if they see someone armed outside a polling place.

What happens if you show up to an early voting location, and there's an armed poll watcher there? Guns are prohibited at polling places in Virginia, but that only applies to 40 feet from the front door of the voting location. Outside that 40-foot radius, people have a Second Amendment right to bear arms, unless it's on the property of a school or the local government has prohibited guns from community centers that serve as polling places.

Abrams injected pot shots and misstatements about Georgia’s gun laws while addressing other questions. She criticized Republican Gov. Brian Kemp for “making it easier” for Georgians to obtain firearms and “flooding the streets with guns.” Gov. Kemp took note. Finally, he’d had enough.

“I feel I need the time to address this whole gun, firearm question because she keeps bringing it up,” Gov. Kemp said.

“Let me tell you something – the law right now is the same as it was two years ago about who can lawfully carry a weapon or not. For Ms. Abrams to say that the legislation that we signed to let you protect your family, your businesses through your Second Amendment rights – it’s just absolutely not true.”

Former President Clinton called on Congress to take further action on gun violence on Wednesday, particularly pushing for the revival of a federal assault weapons ban.

“We must act now,” Clinton says in a video with the media company ATTN:. “Enough is enough.”

The former president’s message echoed similar calls from the White House on Wednesday. Following a spate of recent shootings, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement that President Biden will “continue to do everything in his power” to reduce gun violence, also using the line “enough is enough.”

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Arms discourage and keep the invader and plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property . . . Horrid mischief would ensue were the law-abiding deprived of the use of them. — Thomas Paine, Thoughts on Defensive War (1775).
