"Taser model number X26A has 50,000 volts of power that, when fired, can render a grown man or woman helpless in an instant."

"Many police agencies train with them and Charlotte-Mecklenburg police use a similar model. But now, you too can get one, with no background check or permit, simply going on the Internet. That has critics outraged."

"Jumana Musa of Amnesty International says, 'It's unregulated. There's no screening. There's no official background check as required by law when you buy a handgun. So basically, anyone can go get it.' "

"Amnesty International may be Taser's biggest critic. But they're not alone in their concern about Tasers being in the hands of anyone on the street." ...

"Gun facts is a free e-book that debunks common myths about gun control. It is intended as a reference guide for journalist, activists, politicians, and other people interested in restoring honesty to the debate about guns, crime, and the 2nd Amendment." ...

"Each chapter lists common gun control myths, then lists a number of documented and cited facts that directly dispute the gun control claim. Thus when a neighbor, editor, or politician repeats some slogan propagated by gun control advocacy groups, you can quickly find that myth, then rebuke."

"...Earlier this year, the Ohio legislators passed a bill allowing the secret and hidden carrying of concealed weapons." ...

""An NRA license plate will, ironically, be helpful to our police... When they see the NRA symbol, they'll know that the driver may be packing heat in his car and take appropriate precautions."

"The registration of these plates by gun owners will now serve the safety of Ohioans by providing identification to law enforcement, other drivers, employers, and neighbors."

"The legislation at issue would control theft of intellectual property, and it is limited to systems that are commercially viable only by facilitating copyright infringement. If guns were used only for legal purposes, their manufacture would remain a viable industry. If peer-to-peer file-sharing networks were used only for non-copyrighted material, they would not."

"Ironically, Mr. Lessig invokes the Constitution to defend his premise. But it is the Constitution that protects creators' exclusive rights to their work. Congress understands the rationale for this; as illegal file sharing increases, artists, authors and other creators have less incentive to create, and we as a society are poorer for it. ..."

"In 1998, a Pennsylvania Game Commission task force proposed that deer hunters in Lancaster County and seven other growing southeastern counties be forced to shelve their rifles and use only shotguns."

"After all, it was widely assumed that slower-moving shotgun slugs would provide safer hunting around suburbs. Surrounding states such as Maryland, Ohio and New York had already mandated shotgun-only in many areas."

"But the outcry by local hunters and sportsmen’s groups was so vociferous that the PGC wisely asked for proof showing that shotgun slugs would be safer than rifle bullets."

"Now, after nearly seven years of gathering statistics in Pennsylvania, it turns out that not only are shotguns not the panacea for hunting in close quarters, but less powerful shotguns might actually increase the incidence of buildings or people being shot when the bullets fly."

"They do not march; they stroll. With eyes that practically drool, the soldiers gaze at tables cluttered with price-tagged weapons. They clutch Bowie knives with purpose, aim shotguns at imaginary targets or test the comfort of Army helmets. Some of the soldiers arrive unarmed; others come prepared for the frontlines. They enter the room with long blades hidden in sheaths or rifles slung over shoulders or pistols gripped in palms."

"Their arms are silent ... for now."

"He wasn't talking about deer. He was talking about Hmong folk." ...

"Suppose my neighbor had tripped in the dark and the thing went off? Or worse, he'd actually accosted an armed man and a gunfight broke out in my side yard, within a few feet of where my daughter was sleeping in her bedroom? Hey, if somebody breaks into your house, there's nowhere to retreat to, and you've got no other choice, then that's a different story, but you never, never, never, confront a mere trespasser with a weapon."

"Very bad things can happen."

FULL TEXT BELOW:

In regard to the recent spate of letters about guns on campus, I would draw to the attention of the reader that the rule against possessing a weapon on campus is illegal. In the Supreme Court ruling Madison v. Marbury (1803), Chief Justice John Marshall wrote "… an act of the legislature, repugnant to the Constitution, is void.

Since the state Legislature created Purdue and it is therefore an instrument of the state of Indiana, all rules thereof must conform to the state and national constitutions. We need not even appeal to the national constitution but just to the state constitution, Article I, section 32: "The people shall have a right to bear arms, for the defense of themselves and the state."

Unquestionably, the University rule against possession of arms is against the state constitution, for it deprives citizens of this right.

"I find it interesting that Gary Mayor Scott King suggests more gun laws are somehow going to avert incidents such as the recent shooting at Brunswick Elementary School."
