A would-be burglar got an unwelcome surprise today when a resident shot him as he tried to break in, authorities said. The shooting happened around 1:15 p.m. at 1910 Lonsdale Pike, Knoxville Police Department Lt. Mark Pressley said. No charges have been filed or names released yet. The man made it to the corner of Tennessee and Western avenues, where he asked someone to call an ambulance, Pressley said. Police arrived with the ambulance, which took him to the University of Tennessee Medical Center. His injuries weren't believed to be life-threatening, police said.

In a pre-emptive strike against anti-gun leaders in the new Congress, the National Rifle Association is planning to distribute a graphic brochure that drafts its Second Amendment mission in alarmist terms. "Freedom in Peril," a rough copy of which was leaked onto the Internet last Friday, takes aim at the enemies of gun rights: from New Orleans policemen who confiscated weapons during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina to "one-world extremists" of the United Nations, animal-rights "terrorists," and illegal alien gangs.

"...WHEREAS it has been too much the habit of idle and inconsiderate persons, on Christmas and New Year's Day and Eve to indulge in firing off guns, pistols, squibs, and crackers, and burning of gun-powder in divers other ways, to the great annoyance of the peaceable inhabitants of this city, and to the manifest danger of their persons and property--all which practices, where they are not contrary to the express ordinances of the corporation, amount to "disorderly conduct," and as such are punishable by law: ..."

"...with a view to prevent such disorderly practices, I, Joseph Gales, jr. Mayor of Washington, do enjoin upon all Police Constables, Ward Commissioners, and others, whose duty it is to preserve peace...."

[Excerpt]"We cannot allow our police officers to shoot and kill our citizens without justification like rabid dogs," District Attorney Eddie Jordan said."

[Excerpt]A spokesman for Mayor Ray Nagin declined to comment on the indictments.

[Excerpt]The victims were Ronald Madison, a 40-year-old mentally retarded man, and James Brissette, 19. The coroner said Madison was shot seven times, with five wounds in the back.

Comment: No mention in this article of whether the shootings occurred before or after the victims' guns were confiscated. Either we are equal or we are not. Good people ought to be armed where they will, with wits and guns.

Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign/Center to Prevent Gun Violence, released the following statement today on the death of Gerald R. Ford: "Supporters of common sense measures to prevent gun violence lost a good friend today with the passing of former President Gerald R. Ford. During his days in Congress, Ford supported efforts to ban cheap handguns (known as 'Saturday Night Specials'). As President, he pushed for a 15-day waiting period for handguns. In 1992, he joined former presidents Reagan, Carter, and Nixon in supporting the Brady Bill which provided for background checks on sales by licensed dealers. In June 2004, Ford joined former presidents Clinton and Carter in urging the renewal of the ban on assault weapons."

A whole lot of Americans think about guns the way Ralphie Parker does. Ralphie is the boy in Jean Shepherd's A Christmas Story who is consumed with getting one thing for Christmas: "An official, Red Ryder, carbine action, 200-shot, range model air gun with a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time." In daydream sequences from the 1983 movie, 9-year-old Ralphie envisions himself using the Red Ryder rifle to protect his family from Black Bart's marauding gang. Protection of self and others is a noble goal. The problem, as Ralphie's mother, teacher - and even Santa Claus - point out to Ralphie is that, "You'll shoot your eye out."

Regarding the recently passed changes to the concealed-carry laws, many people don't realize that any laws made by cities, towns and villages can only be misdemeanors. The gun laws that they have enacted do little or nothing to stop crime.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The writings of scholars who have written on the subject are virtually united on the point that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to keep and bear arms, not simply the state national guards. — PROFESSOR GLENN HARLAN REYNOLDS
