Nearly three in every four red flag law requests in Michigan over the last year resulted in the confiscation of guns from an individual believed to be a threat to himself or others, new state data shows.
Judges across Michigan granted 287 of the 391 requests for a seizure of weapons during the first full year of implementation of the Extreme Risk Protection Order Act, a red flag law that was passed in the wake of the fatal Feb. 13, 2023, shooting at Michigan State University.
New state data on how often the law has been utilized in its first year was made public Wednesday by the State Court Administrative Office.

A Genesee County Sheriff's deputy was in court Wednesday after he allegedly left a firearm in a school parking Monday evening.
A Lapeer High School employee found the gun at about 6:33 a.m. Tuesday inside a lunch box in the school parking lot, Lapeer police said in a press release.
The weapon was turned over to police, who determined it belonged to a law enforcement agency outside the county and had been left there Monday evening by an off-duty Genesee County Sheriff's Office deputy who was attending a basketball game at the high school.
Police said they immediately notified the Genesee County Sheriff's Office and conducted an interview with Deputy Jonathan Becher, 45, who was responsible for the firearm.

"When I decided to make this post, I wanted to be helpful for my coworkers and do what I could to prevent people from making rash decisions about their personal safety,” Junge said in an email to the company, relayed by CWA. “I have learned that the only way to be safe around firearms is to be completely informed and vigilant in how they are handled. I also did not want to create the appearance that only lethal force is capable of self-defense, which is why I repeatedly emphasized the need to avoid conflict and obey all applicable laws, as well as gave advice on less-lethal self-defense."
Ed.: I wouldn't take gun advice from the guy, but there wasn't anything untoward in his post (in full at the link). |

Newly appointed Attorney General Pam Bondi wasted no time in making waves at the Department of Justice. One of her first major actions was issuing a directive that will significantly alter the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).
As Stephen Gutowski reported for The Reload, Bondi’s memo instructs the ATF to shift its focus away from alcohol and tobacco enforcement and redirect its resources toward other areas, including immigration, human trafficking, and transnational gangs. |

He wants to declare this year a “Second Amendment Summer” in Florida, which will include a holiday of state sales tax on the purchases of guns, rifles, shotguns, ammunition and accessories during the period from Memorial Day to July 4 – which just so happens to include all of June’s Pride Month.
And unlike past sales-tax holidays, when the break only applied to lower-cost items, the proposed sales-tax holiday doesn’t put a ceiling on the cost of the weapons included in the tax break. |

Tennessee U.S. Representative Andy Ogles (R-TN-5) has filed new legislation protecting the specific identification of firearm and ammunition merchants through the use of codes used in consumer purchases.
To be known as the Protecting the Second Amendment in Financial Services Act, the bill prohibits any entity which facilitates or processes a credit card transaction from using a Merchant Category Code (MCC) which would identify a transaction as being specifically for a firearm or ammunition seller. |

Republican lawmakers in the Peachtree State on Wednesday gave a stamp of approval to a bill that would establish an annual tax holiday on guns and gun accessories.
The measure, SB 47, passed a 31-21 largely party-line vote in the Georgia state Senate this week, sending the proposal to the state House for further consideration.
The bill, introduced by the chair of the Senate Majority Caucus, state Sen. Jason Anavitarte, GOP lawmaker from Paulding County, would carve out 11 days beginning on the second Friday of October each year as a tax holiday. This period roughly coincides with the traditional opening of the state's deer gun season. |

An Illinois circuit court has recently made a significant ruling, declaring the state's Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) law unconstitutional in certain circumstances. White County Resident Circuit Judge T. Scott Webb stated, "the Defendant’s activity of possessing a firearm within the confines of her home is an act protected by the Second Amendment." This groundbreaking decision occurred in the context of the Illinois v. Vivian Brown case, involving a woman who was charged with having a firearm in her home without a FOID card, despite not using it nor having any criminal record. The news of this ruling has been reported by WGN-TV and WFIE. |

Writing one bad check for less than $500 is grounds for permanent disarmament, a federal appeals court has ruled.
On Tuesday, a unanimous three-judge panel for the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals once again ruled against Melynda Vincent, a Utah single mother who sought to restore her gun rights despite a 17-year-old conviction for bank fraud. It previously ruled against Vincent but was tasked by the Supreme Court with reconsidering the case in light of its most recent Second Amendment decision in US v. Rahimi. The panel said the High Court’s guidance failed to change the outcome. |

I believe this order is particularly brazen because of the implications it asserts. Within the first one hundred words of the order, a claim is stated: “Because it is foundational to maintaining all other rights held by Americans, the right to keep and bear arms must not be infringed.”
Do all other rights held by Americans truly require a foundation in the right to bear arms? The wording in the order shifts The Second Amendment’s historical purpose to a prerequisite for all civil liberties enshrined in the Constitution, fundamentally changing its purpose. |

In a short but pointed Executive Order late last week, President Trump tackled the Second Amendment, offering protection for U.S. gun owners.
In the order titled “Protecting Second Amendment Rights,” Trump directed Attorney General Pam Bondi to review all executive actions, regulations, agreements, and agency actions regarding the Second Amendment. Specifically, the order asks the AG to comb through rules enacted by the Department of Justice — including the ATF — during Biden’s presidential term. |

When I taught at a university in Portland, Oregon that I shall not name, this was THE question students protested about, protested over, and about which the administration would broker no dissent. The basic thrust of the “no guns on campus” argument is that the police would hunt down and assassinate black males if they had guns.
In a sane world—one in which we do not inhabit—this would lead to questions like: Do Americans understand the Second Amendment? What about the principles of responsible gun ownership? What happens when gun rights are restricted? When you're defenseless in a dire situation and have to wait 5-30 minutes for armed officers to arrive because some lunatic is murdering people on your campus, then what? |

The man charged with murder after admitting during his brother’s trial that he fatally shot someone during a road rage incident has had his case dismissed. Jacorey Dean, who was accused of murdering Nathaniel Fuller in April 2024 after Fuller allegedly pulled a gun on Dean and his brother, was told by Macon Judicial Circuit Judge Ken Smith on Wednesday that he deserved immunity and dismissed his murder charges. Dean’s brother, Jordan Dean, was previously charged with Fuller’s murder. But during Jordan Dean’s trial, his brother admitted to the shooting while on the stand. So a jury acquitted Jordan Dean, and Jacorey Dean was charged with murder instead. |

But the people of Lincoln Heights did not ask for anyone’s permission to defend themselves. The neo-Nazis were quickly dispatched by a larger group of mostly Black protesters who burned their swastika decorated flags after they ran into the back of a U-Haul truck and fled the scene with a police escort.
Ohio is both an open carry and concealed carry state, meaning that firearms may be carried openly or be kept hidden. After the white supremacists fled, the Lincoln Heights residents mobilized into the well organized militia described in the second amendment to the constitution.

On Wednesday afternoon, students chanted, marched, and demanded better on campus.
"We need more investment into things that actually help," one student said through a bullhorn.
The protest stood against a recent string of violent and troubling crimes.
According to court documents, last week, a 21-year-old student was held a knife point and sexually assaulted in the Welcome Center parking garage.
The man accused of that crime, 40-year-old Eric Brown, was arrested by UHPD later that night when court documents say he became confrontational with police and was shocked with a Taser. |

Have you ever heard of NEO Philanthropy? They’re a left-wing group that has been around for more than 40 years. NEO wants folks to believe it is a partnership between “changemakers and funders.” They claim to provide “resources to groups accelerating change.” Race, gender, and DEI are huge for them, but guns are a problem.
An incredible website database has outed NEO Philanthropy’s actual duties — and those of thousands of other similar groups. NEO, it turns out, is nothing more than a middleman. It receives money and funnels some of it to Everytown for Gun Safety as well as other leftwing, anti-gun groups. |

During a public hearing on the bill Aylia McKee, the Chief Public Defender for Montgomery County, voiced concern that the bill could lead to individual’s being detained pre-trial for years despite a case of self-defense.
McKee referenced a case where a man was charged with attempted murder after shooting back at an assailant in self-defense. McKee said that under the proposed bill an individual with a similar self-defense claim would be forced to remain in jail for possibly three to five years awaiting trial. |

A former fugitive wanted for an Asheville shooting death after a struggle over a gun pleaded guilty in Buncombe County Superior Court Feb. 11, and may be subject to deportation proceedings, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
Arturo Cordero Martinez, 47, of Mexico, was originally charged with first degree murder following the September 2023 death of Ismael Muñoz, 37, on East Oakview Road. But after further investigation by police and a review of witness statements, the charge was reduced to voluntary manslaughter, which state law defines as an unlawful killing under the influence of sudden passion or excessive use of force in self-defense, a news release from District Attorney Todd Williams’ Office said. |
