The Wuhan virus inspired lots of new people to buy guns. That is both unusual and common. Many people didn’t expect to be gun owners until they suddenly found out they needed a firearm.
The good news is that we’ve lived with firearms for hundreds of years. We’ve learned how to live with them safely and and use them reliably. Welcome to the gun culture, and the more you learn the safer you’ll be.

Laser focus and a cool head. Those are qualities Penn-Trafford graduate Kaitlin Korinek always has exhibited.

Those traits also served her well as a collegiate rifle competitor. As a member of Tennessee-Martin’s team, she earned multiple Ohio Valley Conference accolades.

Recently, she achieved her ultimate aim: making the NCAA championships in air rifle thanks to posting a score of 593 (of a possible 600) at the qualifier to earn one of four at-large bids. It was her first chance to compete on the big stage and, as a senior, her last.

But, like so many athletes across the country, her NCAA dreams were dashed when concerns over the spread of the coronavirus shut down college sports.

Bill Kucyk, a local gun store owner, says he's sold about 400 weapons in the last five days.

And that's just at the Southfield location on Eight Mile. He's also sold another 400 guns at his Eastpointe store as well.

"They're buying all my guns and they're buying all my ammunition," said Kucyk, who owns Action Impact. "They're afraid there's going to be a zombie apocalypse or some type of purge or something, I don't know."

The fear is that the coronavirus outbreak will push residents into more desperate situations if they're forced into isolation and quarantine.

Gun and ammunition sales are surging across Pennsylvania and the rest of the country.

Kim Stolfer, president and co-founder of Firearms Owners Against Crime, says sales are up 100 to 600 percent.

The impetus is two-fold, arising from the fear of the future impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

First, could there be a breakdown in law and order as a result of millions of people being unprepared for the virus and targeting those who have prepared?

Using Cover for Self Defense

Cover can be loosely defined as an object that has the capability of stopping bullets. However, there’s often debate over what is and what isn’t cover. For instance, it’s widely accepted that a large tree or a concrete wall stands a good chance of stopping incoming rounds, but what about a car door, engine block or wheel? What about a fire hydrant?

The coronavirus pandemic is causing a big boom in gun and ammo sales nationwide, and right here in the Ozarks.

Owners say it is a perfect storm of sorts. Coronavirus, an election year, some people have their tax refund already, and even the shooting Sunday night in Springfield where four people were gunned down are making for big crowds who want to be better prepared for what may come. Owners tell us they aren't surprised by the uptick in business.

The City of Chenoa is holding a special meeting on March 19th to consider a Local State of Emergency Ordinance. Though details of this proposed ordinance are not yet available, it is possible that it will include the power to ban transfers of firearms and ammunition, similar to what the City of Champaign passed last week. Such proposals not only ban sales, but also prohibit citizens from giving firearms or ammunition to family members, friends, and others in need of self-defense during times of emergency.

The Second Amendment is important to a lot of people in our country, including me. I own three rifles and two handguns, and have been shooting since I was in the first grade, some 50-plus years ago.

But the politics around guns is much different than when I was younger. Much of the NRA’s energy promotes the fear that those of us who support commonsense gun laws are actually trying to take guns away from law-abiding citizens. That is not true.

I am concerned about my needs because they aren’t being protected by liberal socialists who want more power. The individual right to own guns is to protect us against a socialistic government which gains too much power legally over the working class people.

Both our Democratic senators don’t want the Second Amendment at all. Sen. Schumer is full of rage and hatred over Trump impeachment finding – not guilty. So people in power like Schumer, Gillibrand, Pelosi and Schiff never stick up for the middle class who pay their salaries in their federal tax file.

The desire for a resolution declaring Crow Wing a Second Amendment dedicated county goes beyond firearms, “gun culture” and the perception that this is a right versus left or GOP versus DFL fight.

The movement for a resolution is about due process because due process matters to us, as it should to anyone who respects the Constitution and understands that it is a limit on government, not the citizenry.

Kay County Commissioners recently approved a measure making the county a second amendment sanctuary county, pledging to protect the rights of citizens to safely keep and bear arms.

The declaration was presented to the commissioners by Kay County Sheriff Steve Kelley. The measure prevents any firearm restrictions at the state level from impacting firearms owners in the county.

Our country has a gun violence problem and we can either refuse to acknowledge it or create solutions that keep our families safe while protecting our freedoms. According to Merriam-Webster, “neglect implies giving insufficient attention to something that merits one’s attention.”

My experience as an engineer has taught me to make data-based decisions, so let’s consider the data. In the U.S., 100 people die from gun violence every day and our gun homicide rate is 25 times that of other high-income countries according to a 2016 study published in the American Journal of Medicine. We see the evidence in daily news headlines and cannot continue to be negligent.

As stores around the nation are struggling to keep up with the demand for food, toilet paper and hand sanitizer, there is another golden commodity fast disappearing from the shelves amid the coronavirus crisis: firearms.

Over the past week, gun stores countrywide have seen long lines and a wiping out of inventory as unnerved customers turn to their Second Amendment rights in the bid for self-protection.
