The shooting happened after 2 p.m. in the area of Northwest 4th Avenue and 71st Street, where Miami Fire Rescue found the man unconscious, according to Miami Police.

The victim was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital in very critical condition, police said. He was later pronounced dead.

Two members of Congress want the Department of Justice to investigate New York’s gun laws. On May 15, Reps. Claudia Tenney and Elise Stefanik wrote a letter to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, characterizing the state’s gun policies aouts violating the Second Amendment.

In response to the letter—which you can read at the bottom of this story—New York’s top law enforcement officer defended those policies. “Gun safety laws keep New Yorkers and law enforcement officers safe from the scourge of gun violence,” reads a statement from the Office of New York Attorney General Letitia James sent Friday. “We have successfully defended New York’s nation-leading gun safety laws in the past, and we are prepared to do so again.”

In a controversial move, the Trump administration has agreed to permit the sale and ownership of forced-reset triggers—devices that can enable semiautomatic rifles to fire at speeds comparable to machine guns. The decision follows a settlement announced Friday by the Department of Justice (DOJ), ending lawsuits originally filed under former President Joe Biden, who had moved to ban the devices.

U.S. President Donald Trump's administration agreed on Friday to permit the sale and possession of devices that let gun enthusiasts convert semiautomatic rifles into weapons that can shoot as fast as machine guns.

The agreement came in a settlement announced by the Department of Justice resolving lawsuits brought under Trump's Democratic predecessor, Joe Biden, after his administration banned certain "forced-reset triggers."

"This Department of Justice believes that the 2nd Amendment is not a second-class right," Attorney General Pamela Bondi said in a statement, referring to the constitutional right to bear arms. "And we are glad to end a needless cycle of litigation with a settlement that will enhance public safety."

In recent years, the firearms industry has seen an unprecedented tidal wave of new gun cartridges being released by manufacturers. While this is one facet of our new “Golden Age” for shooters, many folks are asking if all the new cartridges and calibers are — in reality — a case of “too much, too soon.” Moreover, when a new cartridge fails in the marketplace, the owners who bought guns chambered in an overhyped “Best New Cartridge of All Time” flameout are left wondering if the failure was by design or just bad luck.

Guns in America: A liberal gun-owning sociologist offers 5 observations to understand America’s culture of firearms

An Asian American and lifelong liberal from the San Francisco Bay Area, I became a first-time gun owner as a 42-year-old in 2011. I began a now 14-year journey into an unfamiliar and complex world of firearms. In my work, I draw on both my personal experiences and sociological observations to understand the long-standing presence of a robust legal gun culture in America.

In contrast to the dominant scholarly approaches, which focus on gun deviance and harm, I find there is more to firearms than criminal violence, injury and death; more to gun owners than straight white men; and more to gun culture than democracy-destroying right-wing politics.

Let me share five observations essential to understanding guns in America:

While some Second Amendment-related companies cling to communist locales with a frozen inability to leave dumpster fire leftist states in the rearview mirror (you know who you are), it’s great to see others moving and expanding into the greener pastures of Free America. That’s exactly what CBC Global is up to these days, getting set to invest $300M into an ammunition plant at the MidAmerica Industrial Park in Pryor, Oklahoma.

The National Rifle Association (NRA) on Friday asked the U.S. Supreme Court to hear its challenge to Florida’s ban on firearm purchases by adults under 21. It’s the latest move by the gun-rights group in its four-year-battle to override the 2018 Florida law that bans 18-to-20-year-olds from purchasing long guns.

The full U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit denied the legal challenge by the NRA in March, two years after a three-judge panel similarly ruled against the organization. The Florida Legislature passed and then-Gov. Rick Scott signed the law shortly after the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland that killed 17 people.

Colorado House Bill 25-1026 is waiting to be signed by Governor Polis, and would increase the minimum penalty for stealing a firearm to a felony. Previously, a stolen weapon had to be worth at least $2,000 in order to qualify as a felony.

It's an issue we previously reported on, as gun thefts have plagued the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) for the past several years.

The police chief said the bill would be a huge help in their enforcement.

In 2023, CSPD says more than 800 firearms were reported stolen to them. It marked a five-year high for the department.

Oklahomans can now legally point a firearm or other weapon at someone if they are defending their home, private property or business under a new law signed by Gov. Kevin Stitt.

Existing state law allows people to point weapons in self defense, but House Bill 2818 expands the justified "defensive display of a firearm or other deadly weapon" to include defense of property.

The new law took effect immediately after Stitt signed it on Thursday, May 16.

The Trump administration will allow the sale of forced-reset triggers, which make semiautomatic rifles fire more rapidly, with the federal government ending a long-standing ban as part of a settlement that also requires it to return seized devices.

The agreement announced Friday by the Justice Department resolves a series of cases over the aftermarket trigger that the government had previously argued qualify as machine guns under federal law.

An eastern Colorado county has passed a resolution declaring itself a "Second Amendment Sanctuary" in opposition to a bill passed by the legislature this year that requires individuals to participate in safety training to be eligible to purchase certain types of firearms.

On May 15, the Bent County Board of Commissioners and Bent County Sheriff unanimously passed a resolution declaring that no county resources will be used to enforce provisions of Senate Bill 003 that have not been upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.

CA: Oakland’s billboard ban is gross First Amendment violation - and Democrats don't care

A recent controversy over a billboard in Oakland, California, has brought to light the city’s troubling firearm and ammunition advertising restrictions. The billboard advertised Turkish firearm manufacturer Canik’s Mete MC9 pistol.

Local media reported that many Oakland residents expressed “shock and outrage” over the billboard, which featured a photo of the handgun with the innocuous message: “Mete MC9 Canik Comes to California.” The billboard promoted the pistol’s introduction to the California market, as the Mete MC9 is compliant with California’s strict gun laws and was earlier this year added by the California Department of Justice to its roster of handguns approved for sale in the state.

The Trump administration has decided to permit the sale of devices that enable standard firearms to fire like machine guns, a move that one person familiar with the matter said was “by far the most dangerous thing this administration has done” on gun policy.

The Justice Department on Friday announced a settlement in a lawsuit brought by the National Association for Gun Rights. The lawsuit challenged an ATF rule banning “forced reset triggers” — devices that allow semiautomatic weapons to fire rapid bursts of bullets.

New York state lawmakers and law enforcement officials are pushing for a bill that aims to curtail the spread of homemade devices that can turn average firearms into machine guns capable of spraying hundreds of bullets in a matter of seconds.

The devices, called “auto sears,” are a few inches in size and can be made on 3D printers. They allow users to automatically fire bullets from handguns or rifles by holding the triggers down.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
A state may not impose a charge for the enjoyment of a right granted by the federal constitution... The power to impose a license tax on the exercise of these freedoms is indeed as potent as the power of censorship which this Court has repeatedly struck down... a person cannot be compelled 'to purchase, through a license fee or a license tax, the privilege freely granted by the constitution.' —MURDOCK V. PENNSYLVANIA 319 US 105 (1942)
