The No. 2 Democrat in the Senate is readying legislation aimed at pressuring the gun lobby to endorse the confirmation of a permanent Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) director. The bill being crafted by Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) would allow for the ATF’s functions to be shifted to another agency, such as the FBI, effectively bypassing the need for the Senate to confirm a director of the embattled bureau. |

A business owner shot and killed a robber Monday in Newark. Around 3:20 p.m., the suspect walked into an unidentified business in the 500 block of Central Avenue in Newark with a loaded gun and a backpack, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and Newark police. The suspect announced a robbery, and ordered the owner to fill the backpack with money and gold. The suspect said he would shoot the owner’s family members if the owner did not comply, authorities said. But the owner fought back. He pulled his own gun, and shot the suspect. |

The White House says President Obama is close to completing a series of executive actions to address gun violence, but they are not a substitute for congressional legislation.
In a report issued Tuesday, the administration has "completed or made significant progress" on 21 of 23 executive actions that Obama outlined Jan. 16 as part of a major gun control initiative. |

The Santa Fe City Council is currently considering an ordinance that would ban the future possession, sale or transfer of any ammunition feeding device that accepts, or can be readily converted to accept, more than ten rounds. Introduced by Mayor David Coss (an outspoken member of billionaire New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s gun control coalition), Councilor Patti Bushee and Councilor Ron Trujillo, Bill No. 2013-27 would outlaw standard capacity magazines used with commonly-owned self-defense pistols and rifles used by recreational and competitive shooters. |

The looming Oct. 1 implementation of a new state law restricting sales of certain firearms in Maryland has instigated a run on guns in Carroll County, with residents forgoing previous preferences in order to get a hold of any gun still available.
Historically, most of the customers of The Brownstone Trading Company in Westminster came in to purchase firearms for hunting or target shooting, according to owner Brad Vosburgh, favoring shotguns for trap shooting and semi-automatic rifles for target shooting.

It was the aftermath of an attempted robbery of a jewelry store on Central Avenue.
It happened at about 3:10 p.m. Monday.
In some surveillance video you can see a crossing guard in the intersection. Parents were walking their kids down the sidewalk. And then across the street, there was a man running out of the jewelry store and someone chasing him.
The attorney for the owner says the shooting occurred in the store, not on the street, and that the store owner was firing in self defense after the suspect made threats and demanded money. |

This past spring, many of you may have heard of, or viewed news reports pertaining to Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke’s public service announcements that made national news.
Sheriff Clarke has, in the past, gone to radio advertising to make public service announcements about drunk driving, distracted driving and other issues.
With this most recent public service ad campaign the Sheriff took on the important topic of self-defense. ...
In what can only be taken as discrimination against the 2nd amendment and the right to self-defense, the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors has introduced, and passed out of committee, an ordinance that would prohibit Sheriff Clarke from appearing in any future public service announcements. |

Police said Allen has a pending charge in New York for allegedly unlawfully restraining Thompson, who afterward obtained a restraining order prohibiting Allen from coming near her.
But state police say that Allen arrived at the mobile home early Sunday evening when he attacked and stabbed Thompson multiple times. White, who witnessed the attack, used a rifle to fire two shots that struck Allen, who was pronounced dead early Monday morning at Rutland Regional Medical Center, police said.
State police have made no statements about whether the shooting was justified or constituted an act of self defense on behalf of another. |

A second southern Illinois prosecutor says he will not press charges against anyone carrying a concealed weapon in his county.
White County now joins, Randolph, Madison and Tazewell in a growing list of counties that will not pursue concealed carry convictions.
White County State's Attorney Denton Aud says since a federal court ruled Illinois' concealed carry ban is unconstitutional he should not prosecute those cases.
"It would be in direct conflict with my oath of office so I would be betraying the trust of those individuals that put me in office by prosecuting anyone for that," said Aud. |

Twenty-four seats are set aside for the public every day for George Zimmerman's murder trial, where hordes of media outnumbered a small group of African-American women who held signs protesting gun violence outside the Seminole County Courthouse on Friday.
The sixth day of jury selection begins this morning.
The Frye hearing that began days before the trial, to determine whether jurors can hear expert testimony on voice analysis of a 911 call, will continue today at 4 p.m.

The movie “Assaulted- Civil Rights Under Fire” is not the last word about guns in America, but it is an excellent place to start the conversation.
The conversation they chose is about rules and our rulers. The right of self-defense exists to protect us from our government as well as against criminals. “Assaulted” shows us where the government violated civil rights to suit those in power. Representative Mike Kelly (R-PA) introduced an amendment on Friday, June 14, 2013 to H.R. 1960, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2014 (NDAA), to prohibit federal funding for the implementation of the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) for one year. The amendment was adopted unanimously by the House of Representatives by a voice vote and included in the final passage of the NDAA, which Rep. Kelly voted to support. |

Within that bill is a provision permitting home rule municipalities to ban certain assault weapons on or before 10 days after the governor puts his signature on the bill, after which that window would close.
The village's ordinance, crafted by Village Attorney William Raysa based on the Cook County ordinance, prohibits the manufacture, sale, acquisition, possession, loan or transfer of any assault weapon or large capacity magazine.
The definition of assault weapon does not include antique firearms, firearms that have been rendered permanently inoperable or weapons designed for Olympic target shooting events. |

A citizen exercising his Second Amendment right to carry a firearm outside of the home shouldn’t fear prosecution.
As state’s attorney, I worry about a state government that fails at times to recognize that its Constitution was enacted to limit government’s interference with basic rights. Illinois is the only state without a provision allowing firearms outside the home. Sadly, Illinois too often occupies “last in the nation” statuses. |

Father’s Day weekend brought plenty of business to Chicago undertakers, with six dead by Saturday night and one more Sunday, continuing the wave of violence against which deadly crime in Washington State, where a new gun control initiative is being tried, pales.
Chicago has stubbornly tried every scheme and legal ploy to keep its citizens disarmed against a series of legal actions and in conflict with what the firearms community considers common sense. Meanwhile, in Seattle over the weekend, police shot a charging pit bull in a Lake City incident, according to the Seattle Times. |
