"On this first day of summer, anti-gun groups are observing the fifth annual National ASK Day -- ASK, an acronym for 'asking saves kids.'" ...

"Second Amendment groups such as the National Rifle Association have long advocated programs that teach children gun safety as the best way to reduce accidental shootings in homes with guns."

"Some Second Amendment advocates also note that statistics on the number of children killed or injured by guns are skewed by the inclusion of older teenagers -- gang members and other criminals who don't care about gun safety and have no respect for the law."

"...Everywhere I turn, I see behavior modification in action. I see it on television, in ecology and other sciences, in the pharmaceutical and health industries, all schools and universities, all laws and hidden legislation, all executive orders, all deed-restricted communities, all transportation issues, all law enforcement powers, all food and water issues, and in every other system that has anything, whatsoever, to do with homo sapiens."

"We are constantly told what to do, where to go and not go, what to eat and not eat, how to die, what pets to keep and not keep, how to raise our children, what gods we can and cannot worship, what to say and not say, how to be sane, what to wear, what to buy, where to buy, where to live and not live, on and on… We are also told that American-style freedom is being spread across the globe. American freedom?"

"Your column on firearms and children makes some good points, but it also promotes some misleading facts. For example, the so-called 'Eight kids a day' statistic includes 19-year-olds who are legal adults. Many of these 'kids' are violent criminals. The statistics become much less scary if you don't pad them with the criminal acts of gangs and drug crimes."

"Alarmist statistics only do a disservice by causing great fear over an issue that is actually one of the lowest threats to children. Yes, the Red Lake and Columbine incidents are shocking and horrible, but the very reason they are is that they are also very rare."

"Last night, with little fanfare, Columbus City Council gave first reading to an ordinance that would ban possession of most semi-automatic rifles. The issue now moves to June 30, where another special public hearing will be held to debate the issue. PRO has been invited to testify, and will do so for about 20 minutes. Anti-gun organizations also will be testifying. Plus, the city will accept speaker slips from 30 members of the public, who will have 3 minutes to make their opinions known -- pro or con -- about this ill-conceived law proposal. The ban could be passed by Council as early as July 11, and would take effect 30 days after such a vote. Council knows that PRO is likely to take the matter to court once again, where we have won twice and forced the city (unfortunately, actually city taxpayers) to pay our legal bills."

"The idea of using rifles for big game in the Southern Tier is one of the most divisive hunting issues I've encountered in the 25-plus years of compiling this column."

"Some hunters support the idea as something that is long overdue while others vehemently oppose it for safety and other reasons. Southern Zone hunters (outside the Adirondacks and northern Catskills) have never been allowed to use centerfire rifles since modern regulated deer hunting started in the 1930s."

"Nevertheless, barring a veto, deer and bear hunters will be allowed to use centerfire rifles in some counties, including Tioga, Chenango and the area of Broome County east of the Susquehanna River starting this fall."

"The city of Roswell would like to portray its change of heart about a weapons discharge ordinance as a compromise that benefits both the north Fulton County community and the National Rifle Association. That's off target."

"Originally, Roswell officials had proposed to remove a provision in a city ordinance that allows a firearm to be used to defend private property. That change would have brought the city's ordinance into conformity with state law, which allows firearms to be used to protect personal safety, but not to stop someone from stealing your car, for instance. The NRA objected strongly to that change."

"In the last 127 years 96 San Francisco Police Officers have died in the line of duty. Fortunately, San Francisco did not add any names to that list on the night of May 5th, 2004."

“Prosecutors say the 29-year-old felon fired first and officers returned fire…in self-defense and defense of each other,” according to The Examiner. The suspect was killed."

"Several officers involved in the aforementioned incident now find themselves before the Police Commission on charges of misconduct, albeit none of the charges involve any allegations of wrongdoing for firing the fatal shot." ...

"The job of a cop shouldn’t be to simulate chum for the cadre of anti-cop activists. Contrary to certain opinion, the most important aspect of police work is the knowledge, skill and ability to employ force in order to protect self or others. The job of policing is sometimes dirty and always dangerous. For cops facing violent subjects, the risks are numerous and the rewards are few. There are good reasons for having force options located on the belt of an officer rather than in storage lockers at district stations. A lethal option in the use-of-force continuum is something that every cop trains for but none desire."
