Forty-six athletes are participating in the Alaska Biathlon Camp at Kincaid Park this week. The camp, hosted by the Alaska Biathlon Association, includes some who are new to the sport and others who have international competition experience at the junior level.

Coaches include Tim Burke, a four-time Olympian who recently retired from his competitive career. Burke, of Lake Placid, New York, is now development manager for U.S. Biathlon.

"I think with the skiing culture here, there's a lot of potential," Burke said of his visit to Alaska.

He's joined by Marine Dusser, a former member of the French national team, now an assistant coach for UAA's cross country ski team.

A thief has stolen Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel’s personal handgun.

Now, the county’s top elected official and former sheriff said Thursday he knows what it feels like to be the victim of a crime.

Hackel, who is attending the 2018 Mackinac Policy Conference on Mackinac Island, said his 40-caliber semi-automatic Glock was stolen from his locked Ford Explorer as the vehicle was parked in the driveway of his Macomb Township home.

He was headed into the gym so he didn’t think too much about it but on the way out the first thing he did was look in the console of the Explorer where he kept the pistol and, sure enough, it was gone.

Ken Liddiard oversees a varsity team sport in which boys and girls compete equally, that does not require speed or strength to succeed, and has not produced an injury in his 20 years of coaching.

Yet the coach and his South Lewis air rifle team face uncertainty, as does any public school shooting-based team or club, because of a bill introduced in the state Assembly last month.

The bill proposed by Assemblywoman Linda B. Rosenthal, D-Manhattan, would prevent schools from offering “marksmanship/shooting programs,” such as air rifle, trap-shooting or archery, if approved.

The bill drew immediate criticism from north country legislators who have said it lacked “common sense” and is “counterproductive.”

It was Tuesday night when deputies were called out for shots fired out at Guinda's Corner Store following some kind of confrontation.

Investigators say Kline shot a man twice, hitting him in the stomach and arm. He was airlifted to a hospital, where he was in stable condition.

Kline was not arrested following the shooting. While the case is still under investigation, the sheriff's department said that it was likely a case of self-defense when an assault occurred inside the store.

The retrial of a former Northern Arizona University student charged in a fatal shooting in 2015 was delayed Thursday for a fourth time, frustrating surviving victims and their families.

A jury in Steven Jones' first trial deadlocked on murder and aggravated assault charges, and he had been scheduled for a retrial in July.

“Can we just walk out?” he asked his teacher.

“That’s up to you,” the teacher said with an unusually noncommittal tone.

A few students walked outside; hesitating at first, but then gaining confidence as they went unchallenged. Soon they were gathering in groups in front. It was as if the adults just faded into the background of a Charlie Brown cartoon with all its incomprehensible “wah-wah” talk. The students’ parents weren’t there, and their teachers and school administrators were just stepping aside and letting them leave.

What high school student wouldn’t want to walk out of the classroom to mess around with friends?

A recent breach of Shelton High School’s security by a teen with a BB gun has led some of the school’s students to respond.

“The purpose of gun control is not taking firearms away from current gun owners or repealing the Second Amendment. The true purpose is to ensure that in the future, guns are not placed in the wrong hands,” said high school March for Our Lives organizer and SHS student Julia Meyer. “In addition, the purpose is reforming the Second Amendment to meet today’s weapon standards.”

There were two previous mistrials in the case because the jury could not reach a verdict.

"Both times, we've discussed with the jury why this is a self-defense situation," Day said. "Both times, the jury split."

The previous judge in the case, Fernando Macias, failed to poll each juror for their verdict (second degree murder or voluntary manslaughter), Chan's attorney said. According to a new ruling from the New Mexico Supreme Court, if judges don't poll for each charge, the new trial will only be for the lesser offense. In this case, it was voluntary manslaughter.

The Rhode Island General Assembly has approved, and Gov. Gina Raimondo is poised to sign, legislation making it easier for police to remove guns from violence-prone individuals at “imminent″ risk of killing themselves or others.

Democrat Raimondo is expected to sign the so-called “red flag″ bill on Friday morning, along with a bill to ban on the kinds of “bump-stock″ devices that enabled a lone gunman to kill 58 concert-goers in Las Vegas last October.

They are what attorney and Vietnam veteran Mark Nestor calls “baby steps toward protecting our students.”

Three resolutions restricting access to guns unanimously supported by the veterans of the Lester S. Wass American Legion Post 3, which Nestor commands, are bound for next week’s American Legion State Convention to win its support.

Then, with the nation gearing up for Friday's National Gun Violence Day, and before even getting to the convention, came the news that the three resolutions had been unanimously supported by American Legion District 8, which represents 33 American Legion posts located within Essex County.

Families of students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School -- where a former student allegedly killed 17 people in February -- have banded together to create a political action committee (PAC) to counter the National Rifle Association (NRA) and candidates it backs.

The Families Versus Assault Rifles PAC -- or FAMSVARPAC -- aims to “remove the NRA from our political system, and then to amend the National Firearms Act of 1934 to include a ban on assault weapons, bump stocks and high-capacity magazines,” according to its website.

Surrounded by gun control supporters and high school students, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy on Thursday officially signed a new law banning bump stocks and other devices that increase how fast a gun can fire.

"This legislation was the result of a shooting in Las Vegas where bullets were raining down on concert goers," Malloy said, referring to the October 2017 shooting at a Las Vegas concert that left 58 people dead and more than 800 injured.

This may come as a surprise to some, but California is finally following Vermont in raising the gun purchasing age to 21. That the Golden State is moving forward with such an anti-Second Amendment law, of course, should surprise no one. The shocker is that Vermont beat them to it.

While other academy students will not participate in the City Hall event, they can opt to wear orange instead of their traditional navy and khaki uniform.

Ninety-six pairs of shoes, some worn and tattered, others in second-hand shop condition, will line City Hall’s exterior columns beginning Friday.

Here in the gun-crazy U.S. of A., politicians engage in plenty of creative rhetoric when it comes to harrumphing about school shootings.

It's easy to see how that comes about. On one hand, they've gotta look eager to do something, anything, to stop another tragedy. But, on the other, they're under intense pressure from the National Rifle Association, which writes hefty lobbying checks and knows how to mobilize its faithful to vote out officeholders who don't fetishize firearms.

Those South Dakota values she said are what people here need in Washington.

"We're rugged, we're independent-minded individuals, and I want somebody that's going to stand up, and I've been there and understand it," she said. "It's keeping government out of our families and telling us how to raise our children. It's keeping government out of our businesses. It's defending our second amendment. It's defending life. That's what I want to do in Washington, D.C."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Today, we need a nation of Minutemen, citizens who are not only prepared to take arms, but citizens who regard the preservation of freedom as the basic purpose of their daily life and who are willing to consciously work and sacrifice for that freedom. — John F. Kennedy
