In the latest episode of Freedom’s Disciple, Jonathon Dunne covered a story about an attack on a 90-year-old in the U.K., illustrating why the Second Amendment is a fundamental right. America loves to discuss the Second Amendment, and both sides make it about guns, but the Second Amendment at its core has nothing to do with guns. On this week’s show, Jonathon explained why it is about the right to self-defense and how the individual decides to protect themselves and those closest to them..

The Army has awarded contracts to ten companies to submit submachine guns for the service to evaluate. The service has not purchased a new submachine gun for more than seventy years, and is reportedly considering them for units tasked with protecting senior Army leaders. The U.S. Army has awarded approximately $200,000 to ten companies for evaluation weapons under the Sub Compact Weapon (SCW) program. The service posted a Request for Information (RFI) in May 2018 for a SCW that will fire 9x19-millimeter (9mm Luger) ammunition, fire full automatic, and have a Picatinny rail for attaching lights and optics. The RFI also mentions the capability to mount a suppressor.

Law enforcement officers leaving behind their firearms inside bathrooms is not uncommon, said Russell Ricalde, a former federal agent. “It doesn’t show that somebody is intentionally careless or has poor training," he said. "I mean it could be, it’s possible that if something happens it’s because the person was not vigilant about keeping track of their gun, but mostly it’s just circumstances."

Anti-gun activists are falsely stating that Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, who is running for governor with a strong NRA rating, let thousands of people buy guns illegally while in charge of the Department of Agriculture. It is false. This failure of an employee did not allow a single gun purchase. It was about allowing licenses to carry concealed weapons.

It was a particularly bloody weekend in Chicago, according to the Chicago Sun-Times, which reported nine people killed and another 29 wounded between Friday evening and Monday morning.

While CNN has tried to put a nice face on the problem, reporting that May marked the 15th consecutive month of declining “gun violence,” The Crime Report website reported May 30, “Despite the 19 percent decline in murders and 20 percent decrease in shootings, Chicago has tallied nearly as many homicides in 2018 as New York City (106) and Los Angeles (92) combined.”

School Shootings: It Isn’t the Guns, It’s the Internet

Only a few months after the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, tragedy struck again at Santa Fe High School 30 miles south of Houston. A student started shooting in an art classroom with his father’s shotgun and revolver. Ten people died and 10 others were wounded before the shooter surrendered to the police. Thus far, little is known about the motives of the shooter, making it difficult for commentators to blame something specific. He was not a jihadist (as was another high schooler who was caught before carrying out mass murder at Stonebriar Mall in Frisco, Texas); he was not mentally handicapped; he wasn’t committed to any ideology at all really.

Photos of Prince George playing with a toy water gun and a fake knife during a family day at a polo match lit up the internet on Monday, with critics saying the toys were an unfortunate choice for the young prince. The future king of England looked down the barrel of the gun and played with his mother Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, pointing the gun at her face. He and his sister Princess Charlotte sat on the grass watching their father, Prince William, take part in Sunday’s Maserati Royal Charity Polo Trophy match at the Beaufort Polo Club.

The battle over gun control could influence Connecticut’s hotly contested race for governor, despite the state passing wide-ranging legislation five years ago after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Some advocates contend more can be done. But many of the state’s roughly 300,000 gun permit holders are still angry about the 2013 law, which greatly expanded the state’s assault weapons ban. They contend Connecticut has already passed too many restrictions and fear the next governor could allow more.

My maternal grandparents were of the generation that lived through the Great Depression. One thing I remember about their house was all the rubber bands. See, every morning the newspaper would get delivered, wrapped in a rubber band. They would take the rubber band off the paper and save it by putting it on the axle of a doorknob. Their house had some beautiful cut-glass, Edwardian-era doorknobs and nearly all of them were festooned with dozens of rubber bands, because living through the Depression meant you were conditioned to never throw useful things away. Never mind that you could buy a whole bag of new rubber bands at the corner drug store for 49 cents; waste not, want not.

As our national debate on the merits and risks of gun ownership continues in the wake of the national gun violence crisis, instructors in the Hillsdale area are helping residents learn how to use firearms responsibly, both for hunting and for shooting sports. By state law, Michigan residents are required to take a hunter safety course, with both written and practical components, in order to hunt game. Several locations in Hillsdale County, and just beyond its borders, are helping would-be hunters meet those legal requirements.

When Carry Optics handguns entered competitive circles a few years back, some gun makers incorporated mounting options to their slides to allow popular reflex sights to be installed. SIG took a different approach. They introduced the P320RX package that included a factory-mounted SIG ROMEO1, 1x30mm 1X magnification, red dot reflex sight on their P320 pistol. It was Carry Optics-ready, right out of the box.
